Illusion Dust and Greater Eternal Essence: Reagent Reference
Illusion Dust is the highest-level enchanting dust in WoW Vanilla 1.12.1. It comes from disenchanting green end-of-leveling gear and is spent in almost every level 60 enchant, so on WoW x5 it is the enchanter's main bulk reagent.

What the item is and why you need it
In classic enchanting every level range has its own dust, essence and shard. Illusion Dust covers the top range: it replaces Dream Dust and is used in enchants for bracers, cloaks, gloves, shields, chest and weapons. The same items also give Greater Eternal Essence.
Both reagents can be traded and sold freely. For the full picture of valuable profession materials, see the hub on valuable crafting materials.
How to get Illusion Dust
- Disenchanting green armor. Disenchant turns green armor with item level 56–65 into Illusion Dust about 75% of the time.
- Disenchanting green weapons. Weapons of the same level give Greater Eternal Essence more often, and dust only about 20% of the time.
- Farming level 55–60 humanoids. Green items drop in large numbers from humanoids in Dire Maul, the Eastern Plaguelands and other endgame zones.
- Auction house. Green items 56+ are sold in bulk, and the dust itself in stacks of 20.

Disenchanting table for green items 51–65
Values follow the Wowpedia disenchanting tables; levels are item levels, not required character levels. Chances are approximate.
| Item level | Type | Dust | Essence | Shard |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 51–55 | Armor | Dream Dust, 2–5 (about 75%) | Lesser Eternal Essence, 1–2 (about 20%) | Small Brilliant (about 5%) |
| 51–55 | Weapon | Dream Dust, 2–5 (about 20%) | Lesser Eternal Essence, 1–2 (about 75%) | Small Brilliant (about 3%) |
| 56–60 | Armor | Illusion Dust, 1–2 (about 75%) | Greater Eternal Essence, 1–2 (about 20%) | Large Brilliant (about 5%) |
| 56–60 | Weapon | Illusion Dust, 1–2 (about 20%) | Greater Eternal Essence, 1–2 (about 75%) | Large Brilliant (about 3%) |
| 61–65 | Armor | Illusion Dust, 2–5 (about 75%) | Greater Eternal Essence, 2–3 (about 20%) | Large Brilliant (about 5%) |
| 61–65 | Weapon | Illusion Dust, 2–5 (about 20%) | Greater Eternal Essence, 2–3 (about 75%) | Large Brilliant (about 3%) |
The takeaway is simple: green armor 61–65 is the best source of dust, green weapons are the source of essence. Blue items give no dust: they disenchant into a Large Brilliant Shard, and epics 56+ into a Nexus Crystal.

Dust economy tips
- Illusion Dust is an everyday consumable: both raiders and players gearing a fresh level 60 character use it.
- Green items on the auction house sometimes cost less than the dust inside them; that is the basis of disenchanting for profit.
- Do not throw away Lesser Eternal Essences from 51–55 gear: three of them combine into one greater.
- Farming routes for green items are collected in farming enchanting materials.
