The Mechanical Legacy

Like the dwarves, gnomes are children of the titans. They descend from the mechagnomes — small mechanical helpers built to service titan machines. The curse of flesh turned them into living beings, but the innate drive for machines and precise calculation remained in their very nature.

Gnomeregan and the Dwarven Alliance

The gnomes built the gleaming techno-city of Gnomeregan at the foot of the Dun Morogh mountains. For ages they were the closest friends of the Ironforge dwarves, supplying the Alliance with weapons, machines and brilliant ideas. They were ruled by a superb inventor — High Tinker Gelbin Mekkatorque.

The Gnomeregan Catastrophe

During the Third War, troggs surged up from below into Gnomeregan. The situation grew hopeless, and Mekkatorque made a desperate choice — to release radiation to poison the invaders.

The radiation killed most of the gnomes, and the treacherous advisor Thermaplugg seized the irradiated ruins. It was later revealed that he had engineered the catastrophe himself.

Exile and the Alliance

Robbed of their home, the surviving gnomes took refuge with the dwarves in Ironforge. Never losing their optimism, they remain a loyal part of the Alliance: repairing machines, crafting weapons and dreaming of one day reclaiming Gnomeregan. Their ingenuity is an irreplaceable asset for the union.
