Gorehowl was wielded by Grommash Hellscream — chieftain of the Warsong clan and one of the most fearsome fighters in orc history. His war cry rang across the whole battlefield, and a blow of Gorehowl cleaved foes in two. The axe became inseparable from the image of its master.
The curse of blood
Grommash was the first to drink the blood of Mannoroth, damning all the orc clans to demonic slavery. For long years this curse clouded the minds of the orcs, turning a proud people into a tool of the Burning Legion.
Redemption
When Thrall led the orcs to Kalimdor, it was Grommash who atoned for his guilt. In the decisive battle he faced Mannoroth and, with a blow of Gorehowl, slew the demon — lifting the curse from all orcs at the cost of his own life. So the axe became a symbol of the Horde's freedom.

After Grommash's death, Gorehowl remained a relic of the Warsong clan. Its name is honored as a mark of unbending will and sacrifice. For the orcs Gorehowl is no mere weapon, but the memory of the one who freed his people.
