History of the Forsaken: Sylvanas' Free Undead

The Forsaken are the grimmest people of the Horde: free undead who tore themselves from the Lich King's grip. Once the living humans of Lordaeron, they rose from the dead but kept their minds, memories and a burning thirst for vengeance.
The Forsaken starting zone is Tirisfal Glades, with the capital Undercity beneath the ruins of Lordaeron.
The Scourge and the Plague of Undeath
The tragedy began in the Third War. The Lich King, imprisoned in Icecrown, unleashed the plague of undeath upon Lordaeron. The infected died and rose as mindless soldiers of the Scourge. Prince Arthas, trying to save his people, fell into despair and ultimately betrayed them — so came the Fall of Lordaeron.
Sylvanas' Liberation
Among the fallen was Sylvanas Windrunner — the elves' ranger-general, slain by Arthas and turned into a banshee. When the Lich King's power waned after the Third War, Sylvanas wrenched her mind from his control and freed part of the undead.

The Undercity and the Royal Apothecary Society
The freed undead named themselves the Forsaken and seized the tunnels beneath the ruined capital, founding the Undercity. Their chief goal is to destroy the Scourge and avenge themselves on Arthas. To that end the Royal Apothecary Society works day and night to create a new plague — a weapon against all the living that unsettles even their allies.
Place in the Horde
The living peoples of the Alliance see the Forsaken only as monsters, so Sylvanas forged a pragmatic alliance with the Horde. Yet the honorable tauren and many orcs distrust the undead and their dark designs. In the Western and Eastern Plaguelands, the Forsaken wage an endless war against the remnants of the Scourge.
