Prince and Kirin Tor mage

Kael'thas spent most of his life not at home but in Dalaran. He sat on the Council of Six — the ruling circle of the Kirin Tor — and was counted among Azeroth's most gifted wizards. The court of Silvermoon rarely saw him.

The fall of Quel'Thalas

In the Third War Arthas and the Scourge cut their way to the Sunwell and defiled it. King Anasterian fell and Silvermoon lay in ruins. When Kael'thas returned, only a small part of his people remained.

Birth of the sin'dorei

In memory of the fallen the prince renamed his people sin'dorei — children of the blood. Cut off from the Sunwell, the elves began to suffer from magical thirst. Kael'thas led the best warriors to serve the Alliance, hoping to take revenge on the Scourge.

Betrayed by the Alliance

The Alliance commander, Grand Marshal Garithos, despised elves and gave them hopeless tasks. When Kael'thas accepted help from the naga Lady Vashj, Garithos declared him a traitor and threw him in a cell. Rescued by the naga, the prince left for Outland to join Illidan.

Kael'thas and WoW Classic

In the Classic era Kael'thas is far beyond Azeroth, and blood elves only become playable in the next expansion. Yet his story explains why the Alliance's high elves are so few and why the ruins of Quel'Thalas stand abandoned.

Why it matters

Kael'thas's path from proud prince to exile shows the price of the Third War. It is key to understanding high elf history and how their people split apart.
