Illidan Stormrage: the Betrayer who longed to save the world
Illidan Stormrage is the most ambiguous figure in Warcraft: neither demon nor hero, but the Betrayer who wrought darkness in the name of salvation. His shadow lies over the history of the night elves of WoW Classic.

◆Twin of Malfurion
Illidan was born the twin brother of Malfurion, the first druid, and both loved the priestess Tyrande Whisperwind. A gifted mage, Illidan always craved power more than peace.
◆The War of the Ancients
In the War of the Ancients, when the Legion first invaded Azeroth, Illidan fought the demons — yet secretly drank from the Well of Eternity, gaining demonic might and the burned-out eyes of a seer.
◆The mark of the Betrayer
After the Sundering Illidan secretly created a new Well of Eternity, risking drawing the Legion back. For this Malfurion imprisoned his brother underground for ten thousand years, with Maiev of the night elves as his warden.
◆The demon hunter
Freed in the Third War, Illidan went his own way: he devoured the power of the demon Tichondrius and became the first demon hunter — one who turns the enemy's power against him, forever balanced on the edge of falling.
◆Echoes in Vanilla
In the Vanilla era Illidan is out of reach, but his legacy lives in the culture of the night elves: in their fear of magic, in the vigilance of Tyrande and in Kalimdor's endless struggle with the fel.
◆Why it matters
Illidan embodies the question 'do the ends justify the means'. Understanding his tragedy, you feel more deeply the wariness of the night elves and the price paid for forbidden power.
