What Makes a Material Valuable

Three things make a material valuable: a rare source, a limit on production and demand from endgame recipes. Arcanite is limited by a transmute with a long cooldown, the Arcane Crystal drops with a small chance from thorium veins, and the Nexus Crystal only comes from disenchanting epic items. All of these reagents go into items worn in raids, so their prices hold up even months after launch.

How to Get Valuable Materials

Metals and Transmutes

Every level 60 metal recipe starts with the Thorium Bar: it is smelted from Thorium Ore at a forge. Thorium is turned into the Enchanted Thorium Bar (Enchanting 250: one bar + 3 Dream Dust) and, most importantly, into Arcanite. An alchemist with the Transmute: Arcanite recipe and a Philosopher's Stone turns one Thorium Bar and one Arcane Crystal into one Arcanite Bar.

Enchanting Materials

Enchanters get reagents by disenchanting unwanted gear. High-level green items give Illusion Dust and Greater Eternal Essence, blue items give Small and Large Brilliant Shards, and epic items give Nexus Crystals (epics disenchant this way since patch 1.9). Elemental Essences, Cloth and Leather

Essences of Fire, Air, Earth, Water, Life and Undeath drop from elementals and other creatures in high-level zones and are used by almost every profession — routes are in the elemental materials farming guide. Economy Tips

Do not sell Arcane Crystals right away: if your guild has an alchemist, an Arcanite Bar is usually worth more than the crystal.
Disenchant level 50+ green loot instead of vendoring it: dust and essences always sell.
Demand for shards and crystals rises before raids, so stockpile in advance.
Compare material and finished item prices at the Auction House — no fixed numbers, the x5 market moves fast.
