Section: Lore & bestiary 2 min read Vanilla 1.12.1 · x5 Updated 30.09.2026

Varian Wrynn is the rightful king of Stormwind, son of King Llane. In the WoW Classic era his throne is empty: Varian has vanished without a trace, and the capital is run by a regent and a ten-year-old prince. This mystery is one of the Alliance's main storylines in Vanilla.

Childhood among ruins

Varian was still a boy when in the First War the Horde razed Stormwind and his father King Llane fell to an assassin. Anduin Lothar carried the prince north, and Varian spent his youth at the court of Lordaeron under King Terenas.

Rebuilding the kingdom

After the Second War Varian returned to the restored throne. Stormwind was rebuilt, but a dispute over paying the stonemasons led to a revolt — the birth of the Defias Brotherhood, the bandits later found in the Deadmines.

A mysterious disappearance

Setting off for peace talks in Theramore, the king vanished on the way. Highlord Bolvar Fordragon became regent for his son Anduin, and the enigmatic advisor Lady Katrana Prestor gained ever more power at court.

Who is behind the kidnapping

Alliance players uncover the truth in Marshal Windsor's quest chain: the king's disappearance was orchestrated by the black dragon Onyxia, hiding in the guise of Lady Prestor. The climax is a scene in Stormwind's throne room where the dragon drops her mask. Details are in the Onyxia attunement guide.

Varian in the game

You won't meet Varian himself in Classic — Bolvar and young Anduin stand by the throne. The king's return is a story for later eras of Warcraft. But his absence explains the court intrigue and the road to Onyxia's Lair.

Why it matters

The missing king ties together several Vanilla plots: the Defias Brotherhood, the black dragon conspiracy and the Onyxia attunement. Knowing this story, Stormwind's quests read very differently.
