Turtles are slow, armored beasts of lakes and sea coasts. You can meet them on the shores of Loch Modan and in the bogs of Dustwallow Marsh, where they belong to the wild beasts bestiary as the toughest family of hunter pets.
The turtle is the best tank among hunter pets: its Shell Shield sharply reduces incoming damage, letting it hold even strong enemies.
What turtles are
Turtles are slow but incredibly hardy reptiles with a thick bony shell. They pull into the shell when threatened and can withstand blows that would kill any other beast.
Azeroth hosts river, sea and swamp turtles as well as large snapping specimens. Despite their peaceful nature, a provoked turtle bites hard and doggedly chases its attacker.

The turtle as a hunter pet
The turtle is the most durable pet in the game. On top of huge armor and a large health pool, it has the unique Shell Shield ability: for a few seconds the turtle pulls into its shell and sharply reduces incoming damage.
That makes the turtle the benchmark tank pet: it reliably holds strong mobs and almost never dies, which is invaluable for solo play and dangerous elite targets. The turtle's damage is low — it is taken not for DPS but for unbreakable defense. Turtle shells and meat are used in crafting and cooking.
