Blasted Lands: Level 45–55 Zone Guide
Contents
◆Overview
The Blasted Lands are a red desert in the south of the Eastern Kingdoms for characters of level 45–55. This was once the swamp of the Black Morass, but the magic of the Dark Portal, through which the Horde entered Azeroth, scorched the earth and turned the rocks the color of blood. The portal still stands in the south of the zone, but in patch 1.12.1 it is inactive.
There is only one usable road. In the northeast, on a bluff above that road, stands Nethergarde Keep, an Alliance fortress of mages and paladins who watch the portal, the demons and the ogres. There are no other settlements: the rest of the land belongs to ogres, demons and wild beasts.
Levels and location
| Parameter | Value |
|---|---|
| Level range | 45–55 |
| Status | Contested |
| Continent | Eastern Kingdoms |
| Adjacent zones | Swamp of Sorrows (north), on foot |
| Settlement | Nethergarde Keep (Alliance) |
| Flight paths | Alliance only: Nethergarde Keep |
The only way in is on foot from the Swamp of Sorrows through the pass in the middle of the swamp's southern edge. The Horde should fly to Stonard: the pass is right next to the Horde town. Full routes for both factions are in how to get to the Blasted Lands.

◆The Dreadmaul ogres
The main enemies in the zone are the Dreadmaul ogres. They came through the Dark Portal with the Horde but stayed in the Blasted Lands and regularly attack Nethergarde Keep. Their leader is Grol the Destroyer, who together with Archmage Allistarj and Lady Sevine serves the demon Razelikh. The ogres hold Dreadmaul Hold and Dreadmaul Post. These are camps of hostile mobs, not a Horde base: the ogres attack characters of both factions.
◆Demons, Lord Kazzak and the Dark Portal
In the Tainted Scar in the west, an army of the Burning Legion is led by Lord Kazzak. In 1.12.1 Kazzak is a level 60+ world raid boss killed by a raid; tactics are on the Lord Kazzak page. The demons of the Scar are elites, so do not go there alone.
The Dark Portal is closed in Vanilla. There are no quests beyond it; its lore is covered in the article Dark Portal.
Quests and rewards
- +25 stat potions. Bloodmage Drazial and Bloodmage Lynnore at the northern entrance give five repeatable quests. Ingredients drop from local beasts: Basilisk Brain, Vulture Gizzard, Blasted Boar Lung, Scorpok Pincer and Snickerfang Jowl. The first turn-in gives experience and a 1-hour buff, repeats give only the potion.
- Kum'isha the Collector. A Lost One near the Rise of the Defiler trades draenethyst fragments and spheres, which drop from any mob in the zone, for bags of random goods.
- Nethergarde Keep quests for the Alliance cover the ogres, demons and beasts of the zone.
- For level 60 warlocks, part of the epic mount chain runs through the Tainted Scar.
◆Resources
- Herbs: Firebloom, Sungrass and Gromsblood, one of the few zones where it grows.
- Ore: iron, gold, mithril, truesilver and small thorium veins.
- Leather: scorpid scales for skinners at 40–50 skill.
Tips for WoW x5
Collect potion ingredients while doing the beast quests. The +25 potions are unique in your bags, but you can drink one and pick up the next right away, which is handy before a raid.
Horde players should not look for a flight path in the zone: there is none. Set your hearthstone in Stonard and walk through the pass, it takes a couple of minutes.
Do not mistake Dreadmaul ogres for allies: they are aggressive to both factions, and the ogre magi in the hold hit hard with spells.
Adjacent zones: Swamp of Sorrows and Deadwind Pass. Quest order is in the Blasted Lands leveling guide. Register on wowx5.ru and try the route yourself.
FAQ
?Is Blasted Lands Alliance or Horde?
It is a contested zone. The only settlement is Nethergarde Keep in the northeast, an Alliance fortress with an Alliance flight path. The Horde has no base of its own in the Blasted Lands; the nearest Horde town is Stonard in the Swamp of Sorrows.
?Who lives in Dreadmaul Hold?
Hostile ogres of the Dreadmaul tribe. Their hold is in the northwest of the zone and they have a second camp, Dreadmaul Post, further south. It is not a Horde base but a camp of mobs that attack both factions.
?Does the Dark Portal work in patch 1.12.1?
No. In Vanilla the portal is inactive and cannot be entered: Outland arrived only with The Burning Crusade. Demons roam around it, and it serves as a landmark in the south of the zone.
?Which potions can I get in the Blasted Lands?
Two blood mages at the northern entrance offer repeatable quests: parts of local beasts are brewed into +25 Strength, Agility, Stamina, Intellect or Spirit potions lasting 1 hour. Patch 1.11 reduced the bonus from 50 to 25.
