A conspiracy of two worlds
The portal was created through the joint efforts of the warlock Gul'dan on Draenor and the Guardian Medivh on Azeroth. Medivh, secretly possessed by the spirit of Sargeras, opened the path between worlds to let the savage, blood-hungry Horde into Azeroth.
The First War
The orcs that poured through the portal fell upon the kingdom of Stormwind. So began the First War: the Horde ravaged the lands of men and at last burned the capital, forcing the survivors to flee north and forge the Alliance.
The fate of the gate
After the Horde's defeat in the Second War, the portal was destroyed, and the surrounding lands were forever poisoned by its energy — thus the Blasted Lands were born. The shattered arch remained standing as a grim monument to the invasion.
