Dustwallow Marsh is a fog-bound swamp on the eastern coast of Kalimdor, a zone for characters of levels 35–45. It is home to the Alliance fortress of Theramore and the Stonemaul ogres, allies of the Horde, while black dragons nest in the Wyrmbog to the south, where the entrance to Onyxia's Lair lies. Below is a zone overview for the WoW x5 server on Vanilla 1.12.1.

About the zone

Dustwallow Marsh is all dark water, mangroves and mist. Crocolisks and naga roam the coast, while the interior hides Grimtotem tauren, ogres and black dragons. The zone's main city is Theramore, ruled by Lady Jaina Proudmoore. The Alliance guards the city with watchtowers, while the Horde relies on the ogres of Brackenwall Village.

Location and how to get there

The marsh lies south-east of the Barrens. In 1.12.1 there is only one land entrance — from the Barrens: the road heads south-east and enters the zone past the Shady Rest Inn. Horde players turn north-east from there to Brackenwall Village. For the Alliance the boat from Menethil Harbor, which docks right in Theramore, is more convenient. There is no route from Thousand Needles or Tanaris. Detailed routes are in how to get to Dustwallow Marsh.

Key locations

  • Theramore Isle — the fortified Alliance city on an island in the bay, with a harbour and a flight path.
  • North Point Tower and Sentry Point — Theramore's watchtowers.
  • Brackenwall Village — the Stonemaul ogre village in the north-west, the only Horde base.
  • Stonemaul Ruins — the clan's former home.
  • Shady Rest Inn — a burned-out inn at the western entrance, scene of a mysterious incident.
  • Swamplight Manor and Witch Hill — a witch's home and the surrounding hills deep in the marsh.
  • Blackhoof Village — the ruins of a tauren village.
  • The Wyrmbog — the south of the zone, black dragons and whelps, and the entrance to Onyxia's Lair.
  • Alcaz Island — an island in the bay north-east of Theramore.

Factions and bases

Alliance players pick up quests in Theramore and at its towers. The Horde has a single foothold — Brackenwall Village, where the Stonemaul ogres welcome their allies. Theramore's guards attack Horde players, so the Horde should stay off the main road east.

Dungeons and raid

There is no levelling dungeon in the zone, but the Wyrmbog holds the entrance to Onyxia's Lair, a level 60 raid. You need the key amulet from the attunement chain to enter. Finding the cave is covered in how to get to Onyxia's Lair.

Quests

  • The investigation of the burned Shady Rest Inn — for both factions.
  • The Missing Diplomat — a long Alliance chain that concludes in Theramore.
  • Brackenwall Village quests for the Horde: ogres, naga, dragons and the Grimtotem.
  • Hunting black dragons and whelps in the Wyrmbog.
  • Onyxia attunement steps: part of the Alliance chain runs through Theramore, and one of the Horde trials takes place in the Wyrmbog.

The full order is in the Dustwallow Marsh leveling guide.

Tips for x5

  • At x5 rates the marsh goes by fast: start around level 35 and move on as soon as the quests turn grey.
  • Horde players should grab the Brackenwall flight path right away, Alliance players the Theramore one. Every route is in the flight paths guide.
  • Do not venture into the Wyrmbog alone at the low end of the level range.
