A prison for the elements
When the Titans ordered young Azeroth, the elements under the Old Gods rose up and were shattered in the Elemental Sundering. The Pantheon could not destroy the primal forces, for they are part of the world itself. So the Titans locked all the elementals and their lords away in a separate dimension — the Elemental Plane.
The four realms
The Elemental Plane is divided into four realms, one for each primal force. In the fiery halls rules Ragnaros; in the watery deeps, Neptulon; in the stone depths, Therazane; and in the sky cyclones, Al'Akir. Each realm is an endless embodiment of its element in its purest form.
Breach into Vanilla
Though the whole Elemental Plane is closed to mortals, a shard of it burst into our world. Ragnaros's fiery realm, the Firelands, cracked open deep beneath Blackrock Mountain when the Dark Iron dwarves summoned the Firelord. Thus was born the Molten Core — the one place in WoW Classic where heroes set foot on elemental ground.
Gates and summonings
The bond between worlds is held by portals and summoning rituals. Cultists, shamans and mages have spent ages learning to open gates into the Elemental Plane to bend elementals to their will. It was thus that the Dark Iron dwarves brought upon themselves enslavement by Ragnaros in the depths of Blackrock.
Meaning for the world
The Elemental Plane explains the nature of the elementals found across Azeroth: they are guests or exiles from this dimension. Understanding the Elemental Plane reveals one whole picture — a single ancient thread runs from the Old Gods to the Molten Core.
