The Dark Iron are the most tragic of the three dwarven clans. Having lost the struggle for power, they made a pact with fire itself — and paid with their freedom.
The War of the Three Hammers
After King Modimus died, the three dwarven clans fought over the throne of Ironforge. The Dark Iron clan, led by the sorcerer-thane Dagran Thaurissan, lost and was exiled. They marched south and founded Shadowforge City beneath Blackrock Mountain.
Summoning Ragnaros
Hungering for revenge, Thaurissan and his wife Modgud attacked both Ironforge and Aerie Peak at once — and were defeated on both fronts. In desperation the Dark Iron sorcerers summoned Ragnaros the Firelord. His arrival triggered an eruption that formed the Searing Gorge, and Ragnaros enslaved the clan.

Significance in Vanilla
The Dark Iron are the central low-to-mid level enemies of the Eastern Kingdoms. In Blackrock Depths players storm their capital, and in the Molten Core they fight their true master. Dwarves who broke away formed the Thorium Brotherhood, a neutral faction of smiths.
Dark Iron Ale and the Hammer of Doom are signature items of this clan, tied to the Blackrock Depths quests.
Dark Iron on an x5 server
On our server the road to the Dark Iron is a whole character career. First the Blackrock Depths dungeon with its maze of halls and brewery, then the opening of the Molten Core gates through the Hammer of Doom quest. Reputation with the Thorium Brotherhood unlocks the era's best blacksmithing recipes. Dark Iron dwarves appear on the surface too: their camps are scattered across the Searing Gorge and Burning Steppes, offering plenty of mid-level quests.
