Death knights are the dark champions of the Scourge, the elite of the Lich King's undead host. Where ghouls and skeletons are expendable infantry, death knights command them, leading the undead hordes into battle.
A death knight is no common corpse but a general who has kept his mind. It is they who turn mindless mobs of undead into a disciplined army.
Who are the death knights
The first death knights were created by the Burning Legion and the Scourge from the fallen warlocks of the Shadowmoon clan, binding their souls into the bodies of dead knights. Later the Lich King forged new champions from broken paladins and warriors, granting them mastery of runes, death coil and undead steeds.
A death knight's weapon is a runeblade that drinks the souls of the fallen, and his mount a skeletal or spectral horse. In battle they blend the heavy onslaught of a warrior with dark magic.
Arthas — first among the champions
The greatest death knight was prince Arthas Menethil. Taking up the cursed blade Frostmourne, he betrayed Lordaeron, razed Stratholme and brought the Scourge to the peak of its power, then merged with the Lich King on the Frozen Throne.
Beside him served Kel'Thuzad — a necromancer turned lich — proving that the higher undead keep both will and ambition.
