The War of the Ancients
Ten thousand years ago, during the War of the Ancients, the Burning Legion invaded Azeroth through a portal opened by Queen Azshara. The dragon Aspects fought the demons, but the odds were hopeless, and the world stood on the brink of ruin.
Neltharion's secret design
Neltharion, the Aspect of earth, proposed a weapon able to shatter the Legion. He forged a golden disc and convinced Alexstrasza, Malygos, Ysera and Nozdormu to pour part of their power into it. But madness had already claimed him: the whispers of the Old Gods had driven the Aspect of earth insane.
The betrayal
When the Aspects filled the disc, Neltharion turned its power against all — against the dragons and the night elves alike. On that day he became Deathwing the Destroyer. The Demon Soul weakened the other Aspects, and its maker nearly destroyed those he had sworn to protect.
The artifact's destruction
The Demon Soul's power was so great that only the disc itself could destroy it. Ages later, heroes and dragons managed to reach into the past and shatter the disc during the War of the Ancients itself, robbing Deathwing of part of his strength. So one of the most dangerous designs in Azeroth's history was undone.
Place in Vanilla lore
In the age of WoW Classic, Deathwing lies hidden, but his brood rules Blackwing Lair: Nefarian and Onyxia are his children. The story of the Demon Soul explains why the black dragons became enemies of all living things.
