Blackwing Lair (BWL) — raid guide

Blackwing Lair is the second 40-player raid in WoW Classic Vanilla and a step up from Molten Core on the WoW Classic X5 realm (1.12.1, x5 rates). It is home to the dragon Nefarian and drops Tier 2 — the strongest sets of the Vanilla era.

Requirements and attunement

Minimum level is 60. Recommended is MC completion and Tier 1 / Pre-BiS gear. Attunement: quest through UBRS, ending with a teleport into BWL via a special orb at the entrance.

Bosses

Blackwing Lair has 8 bosses.

Razorgore — you control him to destroy eggs while the raid defends from mob waves.
Vaelastrasz — Burning Adrenaline kills players on a timer; pure DPS race.
Broodlord Lashlayer — preceded by the Suppression Room; CC required.
Firemaw / Ebonroc / Flamegor — three wing drakes; Wing Buffet turns tanks.
Chromaggus — random set of 5 debuffs, five different forms; purge the right debuff.
Nefarian — finale; ClassCall abilities per phase, skeleton rez in the final phase.

Loot

BWL drops Tier 2 (9 pieces) and unique weapons. Key drops: Ashkandi (two-handed sword), Crul'shorukh (two-handed axe), Tier 2 tokens for all classes. On x5 rates a good raid clears in 2–3 hours.

FAQ

How do you get into Blackwing Lair?

The entrance is inside Blackrock Spire. Attunement: complete the UBRS quest (kill General Drakkisath and loot the Orb of Command), which opens the orb portal to BWL. The quest begins with Marshal Windsor / Captain Brehm in BRD.

Is BWL harder than Molten Core?

BWL is significantly harder: more mechanics (Suppression Room, Chromaggus debuffs, Vaelastrasz enrage timer), higher DPS and coordination requirements. On x5 rates progression is faster than on vanilla servers.
