Boss mechanics are what separate a raid boss from beefy trash. In WoW Classic 1.12 bosses have enrage, phases, adds, damage cones and debuffs with a 16 limit. Understanding these matters more than gear: raids die from a missed mechanic, not a lack of damage. Below is a general breakdown.

Совет

Remember the 16 debuff limit: a boss holds no more than 16 debuffs at once. Important ones (Sunder Armor, Curse of Recklessness, Faerie Fire) push off DoTs, so they are prioritised. Debuff and dispel mechanics are in removing effects.

Enrage and the DPS check

Enrage (berserk) is a timer after which the boss surges in power:

  • it sets a time limit on the kill — that is the DPS check;
  • the raid must beat it via damage, world buffs and consumables;
  • a "soft enrage" is a gradual ramp (stacks on the tank), a "hard enrage" is a sudden damage jump.

If you cannot beat the enrage you need more damage or better positioning, not another try "for luck".

Fight phases

The boss changes behaviour by HP or timer:

Phase triggerExampleRaid reaction
By HP %boss goes airborneswitch to adds
By timernew debuff/summonspread or switch target
By targetaggro swap/feartank swap

The raid knows the transitions ahead and prepares — macros and raid warnings help you not miss a phase.

Adds, cones and AoE

  • adds — extra mobs: assign an off-tank and kill order via marks and the main assist;
  • cones/frontal attacks — the tank faces the boss away from the raid (see positioning);
  • AoE — spread and move out of pools;
  • add control — fear, traps, stuns (see crowd control).

Debuffs and dispels

  • watch the 16 limit — do not clutter the target with extra DoTs if it pushes off Sunder;
  • dispel dangerous player debuffs (curses, magic, poisons) — see removing effects;
  • some debuffs cannot be removed — ride them out with defensive cooldowns (see raid cooldowns).

How to learn a boss

  • Read the tactics before the pull, split them into phases and assignments.
  • First pulls are for mechanics, not damage: learn to survive the phases.
  • After a wipe review one mistake at a time (see wipe recovery).
  • Save defensive and mana cooldowns for the critical moments of a phase.

FAQ

What is a boss enrage

A timer after which the boss becomes much stronger and almost certainly wipes the raid. Enrage sets a time limit — a DPS check: the raid must kill the boss in time.

What is the 16 debuff limit

In WoW Classic 1.12 a target holds at most 16 debuffs at once. If DPS apply many DoTs and debuffs, important ones (like Sunder Armor or Curse of Recklessness) can be pushed off, so they are prioritised.

How do I read boss phases

A boss changes behaviour by HP or timer: it summons adds, goes airborne or applies a new debuff. The raid knows the transitions ahead and prepares actions for each phase.

How do I handle adds on a boss

Assign an off-tank or add duty, mark a kill order and use crowd control (fear, traps). The main assist decides who dies first.
