Positioning is the invisible mechanic that wipes raids more often than a lack of damage. In WoW Classic 1.12 it matters where melee, casters and healers stand: group buffs only reach your party, and line of sight decides whether a cast lands. Below is how to lay out the raid.

Совет

Group buffs in vanilla only affect your own five-man party: shaman totems and some paladin auras/blessings. So the group setup is part of positioning — put a shaman with melee for Windfury and a mana totem with casters.

Stack and spread

The RL's two basic calls:

  • stack (group up) — catch group heals, auras and totems, handy for AoE on mobs;
  • spread (scatter) — against AoE, chain lightning and player-targeted "bombs";
  • switching between them must be instant on a raid warning (see raid macros).

Agree in advance what "stack" and "spread" mean on a specific boss.

Melee and caster camps

The classic layout on a boss:

GroupWhereWhy
Tankson the boss, facing away from raidpoint the front away from people
Melee DPSbehind/beside the bossavoid frontal attacks
Ranged DPSat range, separate campdodge melee AoE
Healersnear casters, view on tankssee targets, keep LoS

The tank always faces the boss away from the raid — many bosses cleave in a cone or knock back from the front.

Line of sight (LoS)

In vanilla spells need a clear line of sight:

  • hide behind a corner/pillar to break the cast of a dangerous enemy (LoS pull, see pulling);
  • healers keep tanks in view — a heal will not land through a pillar;
  • kiting in a figure-eight around obstacles is part of kiting.

Safe distances and danger zones

  • Keep distance between casters on "bomb" debuffs or you hit a neighbour.
  • Do not stand in pools, fire or under falling effects — AoE kills faster than the boss.
  • Melee move out of cones and stomps; ranged move out of chain lightning.
  • Leave the tank and off-tank room for a swap.

Common mistakes

  • Casters clump on a "bomb" — spread on call at once.
  • The boss faces the raid — the tank eats the front, turn it.
  • A shaman sits with casters instead of melee — Windfury is wasted.
  • A healer loses the tank behind a pillar — mind line of sight.

FAQ

What are stack and spread

Stack means grouping up to catch group heals and your party's buffs. Spread means scattering so AoE and chain effects do not hit neighbours. The RL calls when to do each.

Where should casters and melee stand

Melee DPS and tanks stay on the boss (usually behind/beside its face), ranged DPS and healers stay at range in a separate camp to avoid frontal and melee AoE.

Why does line of sight matter

In vanilla spells need line of sight to the target. Players hide around a corner (LoS) to break an enemy cast, and healers make sure they do not lose a target behind an obstacle.

Why do group buffs only affect your own party

In WoW Classic 1.12 shaman totems and some paladin auras/blessings only affect their five-man party. So the group setup decides who gets Windfury or a mana totem.
