Raid communication in WoW Classic
Communication glues a 40-man raid together. WoW Classic 1.12 has no smart combat prompts, so voice, raid warnings and agreed calls are how the raid reacts to boss phases. Below is how to set up comms so the evening does not drown in chatter and "what do I do?".
Set up a voice channel (Discord/TeamSpeak) and a rule: in combat only the RL, main assist and assigned callers talk. Everyone else listens. One bit of chatter on the pull and half the raid misses the call.

◆Voice chat
For a 40-man, voice is nearly mandatory:
- Discord or TeamSpeak is the standard; share the channel link before the raid;
- the minimum for everyone is to listen to calls, even if muted;
- the RL and heal lead keep a separate "command" talk without clogging the main channel;
- test mic and sound before the pull, not in combat.
Raid warnings and chat
In-game comm channels:
| Channel | Who uses it | For what |
|---|---|---|
| /rw (raid warning) | RL and assistants | pull, readiness, CDs, danger phases |
| /raid (raid chat) | everyone | quick notes, plus on readiness |
| Raid marks | MA and RL | target and kill order without words |
Collect your /rw lines into raid macros, and marks into the raid marks guide.
Callouts per phase
A callout is a short command at the right moment:
- "pulling in 3" — fight start (see pulling);
- "stack" / "spread" — a positioning change;
- "swap" — tank swap;
- "adds right" — switch via the main assist;
- "Shield Wall!" — a cooldown call.
Agree the words before the raid — there is no time to explain in combat.
◆Comms discipline
- Keep the channel clean in combat: the RL, MA and callers talk, others stay quiet;
- questions and arguments go between fights, not on the pull;
- do not talk over the RL — repeat a call briefly only to relay it;
- toxicity on voice breaks a raid faster than wipes (see etiquette).
The raid leader's role in comms
The raid leader sets the tone of communication (see raid leader guide):
- talks short and to the point, no filler;
- mirrors critical calls in
/rwso even the muted hear them; - appoints assistants with raid-warning rights;
- after a wipe calmly names the mistake, not a person (see wipe recovery).

FAQ
?Do I need voice chat for a raid
Yes, in a 40-man voice (Discord or TeamSpeak) is nearly mandatory: reacting to boss phases by text is too slow. At a minimum, listen to the RL's calls even if you stay muted.
?What is a raid warning
The /rw command shows text in large font to the whole raid and plays a sound. The RL and assistants use it to call pulls, readiness, cooldowns and dangerous phases. Regular players do not have it.
?Who may talk in voice during a fight
In combat the RL, main assist and assigned callers (e.g. whoever leads adds) talk. Everyone else stays quiet so calls are not drowned out. Questions and discussion go between fights.
?How do we agree on calls in advance
Before the raid the RL explains key words: pull, stack, spread, back off, swap. Short unambiguous calls save seconds and remove confusion in combat.
