Main assist and focus fire in WoW Classic
A main assist is the player whose target the whole raid attacks. WoW Classic 1.12 has no TBC focus target, so focus fire is organised through the /assist macro and raid marks. Below is how to appoint an assist, build the macro and keep a kill order so damage is not smeared across three mobs.
Vanilla has no /focus command — it and the focus frame arrived in TBC. The only native way to focus fire is an /assist AssistName macro plus a skull raid mark on the priority target. Handy macros are in the macros guide.

◆What the main assist does
The main assist (MA) sets the target for all DPS. It is usually the main tank or an RL helper, because the tank grabs the right mob first:
- the MA keeps the priority target selected;
- a skull raid mark goes on it (see raid marks);
- DPS press
/assiston the MA's name and hit the same mob; - when the target changes the MA switches and the raid follows.
That way 10–12 DPS focus one mob instead of scattering damage.
The /assist macro for DPS
A basic assist macro:
/assist Tankname
Press it — you take the main assist's target. An "assist and attack" version for melee:
/assist Tankname/startattack
Replace Tankname with your MA's nickname. How to create and bind macros is in the macros guide and keybinding setup.
◆Kill order and marks
Focus fire is a "mark + priority" pairing:
| Mark | Meaning | Who touches it |
|---|---|---|
| Skull | kill first | all DPS on assist |
| Cross | kill second | DPS after skull |
| Moon/square | crowd control | assigned CC |
The skull goes on the main assist's target, the cross on the next. Full detail is in the raid marks guide, target control in the CC guide.
Setup and addons
To make assisting smooth:
- bind the
/assistmacro to a visible key (see keybinds); - enable large raid marks so you see the skull from afar;
- the CT_RaidAssist addon shows the assist target and assignments;
- watch threat: even when focusing, do not pass the tank on threat.
Common mistakes
- DPS hit whatever they like — a single MA and macro are mandatory.
- The mark is not on the assist's target — the skull is always the priority.
- Melee attack before the tank — hold
/startattackuntil the tank has threat. - No backup MA named after a death — call a spare in advance.

FAQ
?What is a main assist
A designated player (usually the main tank or RL) whose target the whole raid attacks. DPS press an /assist macro on their name and instantly switch to the right mob.
?Is there a focus target in vanilla
No. The /focus command and focus frame were added in TBC. In WoW Classic 1.12 focus fire is organised through a main assist and an /assist macro by name.
?How do I make an assist macro
Create a macro with the line /assist AssistName — pressing it takes their target. A skull raid mark is usually placed on it so you can see the target without the macro.
?How is assist different from a raid mark
The mark (skull) shows the target visually, while /assist automatically targets it for you. They are used together: a mark on the assist's target plus the macro.
