Magmadar: tactics, loot and tips for WoW x5
Vanilla WoW Classic 1.12 · x5 realm · wowx5.ruWho Is Magmadar
Magmadar is the second boss of Molten Core, a giant core hound found just past Lucifron. Mechanically the fight is a clear step up from the first boss: it is the raid's first real test of fear control and of having Hunters in the group.
Magmadar's defining feature is his periodic Frenzy. Left unchecked, it kills a tank almost instantly. That makes Magmadar a "filter" boss — a raid without Hunters and without fear control will wipe here.
Raid Requirements
| Parameter | Value |
|---|---|
| Type | 40-player raid |
| Min level | 60 |
| Mandatory | 1–2 Hunters for Tranquilizing Shot |
| Anti-fear | Tremor Totem, Fear Ward, Berserker Rage, Will of the Forsaken |
| Key consumables | Fire Protection Potion, Free Action Potion |
Fight Mechanics
Magmadar has no phases — the whole fight is managing three dangerous abilities at once.
| Ability | Effect | Raid response |
|---|---|---|
| Frenzy | Enrage: sharp damage and attack-speed boost | Hunter removes it with Tranquilizing Shot |
| Lava Bomb | Throws a bomb at a random ranged player, leaves a fire pool | Move out of the pool, never stand in fire |
| Panic | AoE fear around Magmadar | Tremor Totem / Fear Ward / Berserker Rage |
| Magma Spit | Poison AoE, steady DoT | Healers watch raid DoTs |
Frenzy is the most common wipe cause. Assign a dedicated Hunter (or a rotation with two) who does nothing but watch for it. A missed Frenzy means a dead tank in 3–4 hits, especially on x5 where auto-attacks are already fast.
Lava pools and fear
Lava Bomb lands on a random player (usually ranged) and leaves a burning pool on the ground. Standing in it is lethal — agree on "clean" zones to retreat to in advance. Panic periodically fears everyone near the boss: feared melee both lose DPS and risk running into lava. Place anti-fear tools so the fear simply never lands.
A Shaman with Tremor Totem is the melee's best friend on Magmadar: the totem removes fear from everyone around it every few seconds. Drop it in the melee cluster and refresh it if AoE burns it down.
Step-by-step Tactics
1. Positioning. The tank holds Magmadar in place; melee hit from behind/side; ranged and healers keep distance, away from lava-bomb zones. 2. Hunter on Frenzy. The assigned Hunter does nothing but Tranquilizing Shot; with two, alternate to cover the cooldown. 3. Anti-fear. Shamans drop Tremor Totem in the melee group, the Dwarf Priest keeps Fear Ward on the tank. 4. Move from lava. On the "lava!" call the marked player and anyone nearby clear the burning pool. 5. Steady DPS. No rushing — keep steady damage, watch fear and Frenzy until the boss dies.
Raid Composition
| Role | Count | Task |
|---|---|---|
| Main Tank | 1 | Holds Magmadar in place |
| Hunters | 1–2 | Tranquilizing Shot on every Frenzy |
| Shamans | 2–3 | Tremor Totem in the melee group |
| Healers | 8–12 | Keep the tank up, watch DoTs |
| DPS | 20–24 | Steady damage, move from lava |
Magmadar Loot
| Item | Type | For whom |
|---|---|---|
| T1 Gloves | Plate/Mail/Cloth | Tier 1 gloves, various classes |
| T1 Legs | Plate/Mail/Cloth | Tier 1 legs, various classes |
| Medallion of Steadfast Might | Trinket | Warriors/tanks — strong defensive-physical trinket |
| Earthshaker | 2h Mace | Shaman/Warrior, solid Pre-BiS |
Medallion of Steadfast Might is one of the best early trinkets for a Warrior tank or DPS — block/attack stats plus an active Strength boost. Earthshaker stays BiS for Enhancement Shamans for a long time thanks to its high weapon damage.
Tips for WoW x5
The fight is faster on x5, but the rules don't change:
The accelerated pace makes Frenzy twice as dangerous — Magmadar already attacks quickly, and with the enrage a tank folds almost instantly. Don't cut corners: keep two Hunters if you want a calm kill.
On x5 the raid gears up fast, but lava pools and fear punish careless play at any rate. Train the raid to step out of fire reflexively — it pays off on every later Molten Core boss.
After Magmadar the wing leads to Gehennas and Garr. See the full route in the Molten Core guide. Start your raiding journey by registering on wowx5.ru and downloading the client.
FAQ
Why is a Hunter mandatory on Magmadar?
Magmadar periodically goes into Frenzy — his attack speed and damage spike, and he can kill a tank in seconds. Frenzy can only be removed by a Hunter's Tranquilizing Shot. Keep at least one, ideally two Hunters assigned solely to watch for Frenzy.
How do you deal with Magmadar's fear?
Panic is an AoE fear around the boss. Counter it with the Shaman's Tremor Totem, a Dwarf Priest's Fear Ward, a Warrior's Berserker Rage and the Forsaken's Will of the Forsaken. Position melee so that being feared does not drag them into lava pools.
What loot drops from Magmadar?
Magmadar drops Tier 1 gloves and legs (various classes), the Medallion of Steadfast Might trinket and the two-handed mace Earthshaker for Shamans and Warriors. Solid Pre-BiS before Blackwing Lair.
