Garr: tactics, loot and tips for WoW x5
Vanilla WoW Classic 1.12 · x5 realm · wowx5.ruWho Is Garr
Garr is a massive fire elemental, one of Ragnaros's lieutenants inside Molten Core. He stands on a raised platform surrounded by eight loyal guardians — the Firesworn elementals. He is the first true "boss with a retinue" in MC: the fight tests raid discipline and add control far more than it tests raw tanking of the main target.
Garr himself is not lethal to a prepared tank. The real danger is his eight Firesworn, each of which unleashes a devastating blast on death. That is why Garr is remembered as an "attention check" boss: one positioning mistake can wipe half the raid.
Raid Requirements
| Parameter | Value |
|---|---|
| Type | 40-player raid |
| Min level | 60 |
| Recommended FR | 100-150 for add tanks and melee |
| Main consumables | Fire Protection Potion, Free Action Potion |
| Key classes | Warlocks (Banish), several Firesworn tanks |
Fight Mechanics
Garr's Abilities
The main tank holds the giant apart from his retinue. His core abilities hit the entire raid:
| Ability | Effect | Raid response |
|---|---|---|
| Antimagic Pulse | Strips magic buffs from the raid and burns mana | Healers re-buff and watch their mana |
| Magma Shackles | Sharply slows melee around Garr | Melee endure it, healers keep them alive |
| Auto-attacks | Steady damage on the main tank | Classic tank-and-healer pairing |
Antimagic Pulse periodically wipes Power Word: Fortitude, Arcane Intellect, Mark of the Wild and other buffs, and it also drains mana. Do not dump all your mana at the pull — keep a reserve, or your healers will hit OOM after a few pulses.
The Firesworn: Three Dangerous Mechanics
Each of the eight Firesworn carries three traits that make the fight tricky:
- Separation Anxiety — if a Firesworn ends up too far from Garr, it gains a powerful damage buff and becomes extremely dangerous. Hence the rule: kill adds close to the boss, never drag them into corners.
- Eruption — on death a Firesworn explodes with a strong AoE hitting everyone nearby. This is the main wipe cause: if the raid stacks up, a single blast catches dozens of players.
- The elementals' own Magma Shackles — extra slow that makes it harder to run out of the explosion in time.
The logic is simple: keep adds close to Garr, but kill them one at a time and always retreat before the target dies. Warlocks hold the spare Firesworn in Banish while the raid works through them in sequence.
Step-by-Step Tactics
1. Mark positions. The main tank pulls Garr to his spot. Dedicated tanks and Warlocks split up the Firesworn. 2. Control the adds. Warlocks Banish as many Firesworn as they can; off-tanks hold the rest. 3. Kill in order. The raid focuses one Firesworn at a time, standing tight to Garr so Separation Anxiety never triggers. 4. Back off before Eruption. As an add nears death, everyone except the assigned tank/catcher runs to a safe distance. The blast fizzles harmlessly. 5. Repeat. All eight are removed this way, after which the raid burns down Garr himself with the classic tank + DPS + healer setup.
Raid Composition
| Role | Count | Duty |
|---|---|---|
| Main Tank | 1 | Holds Garr away from the retinue |
| Off-Tanks | 2-3 | Catch and hold the Firesworn |
| Warlocks | 2-4 | Banish spare adds, deal damage |
| Healers | 8-12 | Sustain tanks, re-buff after Pulse |
| DPS | 18-22 | Kill adds one by one, then Garr |
Garr Loot
| Item | Type | For whom |
|---|---|---|
| T1 Shoulders | Plate/Mail/Cloth | Tier 1 shoulders, various classes |
| T1 Belt | Plate/Mail/Cloth | Tier 1 belt, various classes |
| Aged Core Leather Gloves | Leather | Druid/Rogue (MC set bonus) |
| Gutgore Ripper | Dagger | Rogue (drops near Sulfuron) |
| Brutality Blade | Sword | Warrior/Rogue, solid Pre-BiS |
Aged Core Leather Gloves grant bonus damage against Molten Core creatures — a strong pick for melee for the whole raid. Gutgore Ripper and Brutality Blade belong to the wing-wide table and often drop alongside neighbouring bosses Golemagg and Sulfuron.
Tips for WoW x5
On the x5 server the Garr fight is noticeably faster, but the rates do not remove the explosion mechanic:
With x5 damage the Firesworn drop almost instantly — which makes agreeing on the retreat even more important. Assign one caller to shout "back off!" for each dying add, or a fast burst will let the Eruption catch the raid off guard.
If you are short on Warlocks, on x5 you can kill adds a bit more aggressively — just keep two off-tanks "juggling" the loose Firesworn at Garr's feet. The key is never to drag them away and trigger Separation Anxiety.
Garr is excellent practice for the retinue bosses in BWL. Further down the wing you meet Golemagg and the finale, Ragnaros. For the full route see the Molten Core guide, then register on wowx5.ru.
FAQ
How many Firesworn adds does Garr have?
Garr is guarded by 8 Firesworn fire elementals. Each one detonates with Eruption (a heavy AoE) on death, so you kill them one at a time and always retreat before the explosion. On x5 the extra adds are best kept under control with Warlock Banish.
Do I need Fire Resistance for Garr?
Full Fire Resistance is not required, but Firesworn tanks and melee are noticeably safer with 100-150 FR — it softens Eruption and the elementals' auto-attacks. Healers benefit from FR to survive stray splash damage too.
What loot drops from Garr?
Garr drops Tier 1 shoulders and Tier 1 belts (various classes), Aged Core Leather Gloves (Druid/Rogue with the MC set bonus), plus wing-wide items such as Gutgore Ripper and Brutality Blade when neighbouring bosses are cleared. Solid Pre-BiS heading into BWL.
