Chromaggus: tactics and loot for WoW x5
Vanilla WoW Classic 1.12 · x5 realm · wowx5.ruWho Is Chromaggus
Chromaggus is the penultimate, seventh boss of Blackwing Lair, a two-headed experiment of Nefarian's that absorbed the power of every dragonflight. It is the most mechanically dense fight of the raid before the finale, demanding both resistance preparation and constant debuff control.
Chromaggus breathes two random breath types out of five and scatters a set of Brood Affliction debuffs across the raid. On top of that come Time Lapse (throws you back in time, dropping threat) and Frenzy at the end of the fight.
Raid Requirements
| Parameter | Value |
|---|---|
| Type | 40-player raid |
| Min level | 60 |
| Mandatory | Resistance gear for the fight's two breaths |
| Control | Druids/mages to clear Brood Affliction |
| Consumables | Protection Potions for the needed schools, healing |
Fight Mechanics
The most "layered" BWL fight before Nefarian.
| Ability | Effect | Raid response |
|---|---|---|
| Breaths (2 of 5) | Heavy school damage (fire/frost/shadow/nature/arcane) | Resist set for the two active types |
| Brood Affliction | Five colored debuffs across the raid | Dispel/spread, do not stack all 5 on one |
| Chromatic Mutation | All 5 debuffs on a player → turns into a whelp | Prevent the full set; kill if it happens |
| Time Lapse | Throw back "in time" + drop tank threat | Off-tank taunts, healers wait for HP return |
| Frenzy | Near the end Chromaggus speeds up | Tranquilizing Shot / burst phase |
Breaths and Brood Affliction
At the fight's start the raid identifies which two breaths are active today and equips the matching resistance (e.g. Fire + Frost Resistance). Meanwhile Brood Affliction applies five colored debuffs across the raid. The main danger is not letting all five stack on one player: otherwise Chromatic Mutation triggers and the ally becomes a hostile whelp. Druids (Abolish Poison/Remove Curse) and mages (Remove Lesser Curse) spread and clear the debuffs.
Do not blindly dispel every Brood Affliction debuff: some are more dangerous when mis-stacked than on their own. Assign in advance who controls which colors and watch that no one accumulates all five.
Step-by-Step Tactics
1. Identify the breaths. In the first seconds the raid leader calls the two active types — everyone equips the right resist set. 2. Tank at the wall. Chromaggus stays put; melee back/side, ranged and healers at range. 3. Control Brood Affliction. Druids and mages dispel/spread the colored debuffs, never letting all five gather on one player. 4. React to Time Lapse. After the tank is thrown, the off-tank taunts and healers top the "displaced" player. 5. Burst at the end. Near death Chromaggus enrages with Frenzy — Tranquilizing Shot and finish with a burst.
Raid Composition
| Role | Count | Job |
|---|---|---|
| Main/Off Tank | 2 | Hold the boss, swap after Time Lapse |
| Dispellers | 3–4 | Druids/mages on Brood Affliction |
| Hunter | 1 | Tranquilizing Shot on the final Frenzy |
| Healers | 8–10 | Tanks + raid under breaths |
| DPS | rest | Damage between breaths, resist sets |
Chromaggus Loot
| Item | Type | For whom |
|---|---|---|
| Tier 2 token (chest/legs) | Token | Major Tier 2 pieces |
| Chromatically Tempered Sword | 1h Sword | Melee — top one-hander |
| Elementium Threaded Cloak | Cloak | Tank — armor and resist cloak |
| Girdle of the Fallen Crusader | Plate Waist | Tank/warrior — strong belt |
| Chromaggus's Eye (craft) | Reagent | Head enchant for the raid |
Chromaggus is one of BWL's richest bosses: major Tier 2 tokens (chest/legs), top weapons and tank items. Raids always bring a full group with dispellers for him.
Tips for WoW x5
On x5 the fight feels more dynamic, but resists and debuff control are mandatory at any rate:
Keep several resist sets on hand (fire/frost/nature/shadow/arcane) so whichever two breaths roll cannot catch the raid off guard. This is the most "prep-at-home" boss in BWL.
On x5 raid damage is high, but Chromatic Mutation wipes regardless of gear: assign owners for each Brood Affliction color and do not rely on "it'll sort itself out".
All that remains is the finale — Nefarian. The full route is in the Blackwing Lair guide. To join, register on wowx5.ru.
FAQ
How do Chromaggus's breaths work?
Chromaggus has five possible breath types (fire, frost, shadow, nature, arcane), but only two are active per fight — chosen at random and fixed for the whole fight. The raid identifies the two types in the first seconds and equips the matching resistance gear.
What is Brood Affliction?
It is a set of five debuffs (one per dragonflight color) scattered across the raid. The danger is the combo: if all five land on one player, they turn into a whelp (Chromatic Mutation) and must be killed. Control the debuffs by dispelling/spreading them with druids and mages.
What loot drops from Chromaggus?
Chromaggus drops Tier 2 pieces (chest/leg tokens), the Chromatically Tempered Sword, the Elementium Threaded Cloak, the Girdle of the Fallen Crusader belt and Chromaggus's Eye for a head enchant. One of BWL's richest bosses.
