Lore
ability_warlock_improvedsoulleech Nefarian is a brilliant experimenter who created Chromatic Dragons by crossbreeding the various Dragonflights. He built an army of undead and chromatic creatures with ambitions to conquer all of Azeroth. His palace-laboratory holds the results of experiments on every race.
During the fight, Nefarian uses Class Calls — abilities specifically targeting each class in the raid — making this encounter uniquely challenging.
Fight Mechanics
The Nefarian encounter has three phases:
Phase 1 — Dragon Skeletons
When the raid enters the hall, Nefarian raises 40 Dragon Skeletons from coffins along the walls. They must be cleared before Nefarian lands — otherwise they join the main fight.
Key tasks:
- Tanks pull skeletons to the walls.
- DPS burn skeletons as fast as possible.
- Healers conserve mana — the main fight is ahead.
Phase 2 — Nefarian Airborne
Nefarian flies above the hall and attacks from the air. In this phase he uses:
- Dark Flame — frontal cone dealing 2000–3000 fire/shadow damage.
- Class Calls — targeted at each class in rotation.
- Blast — periodic knock targeting a random player.
- Veil of Shadow — periodic shadow AoE on the raid.
#### Class Calls (Full List)
| Class | Call Effect |
|---|---|
| Warrior | Disarmed for 10 sec |
| Priest | Healing turns into damage |
| Mage | Channeling saps 20% mana, damages raid |
| Paladin | Forced to channel a powerful undead buff |
| Shaman | Chain Lightning bounces to allies |
| Hunter | Pets attack the raid |
| Rogue | Falls asleep for 10 sec |
| Warlock | Summons additional demons |
| Druid | Forced into cat/bear form, cannot shift out |
When your Class Call triggers — don't panic! The effect lasts only 5–10 seconds. Move away from the raid immediately if your call can harm others (Priest, Mage, Shaman).
Phase 3 — Nefarian Lands
Nefarian lands (at low HP or by timer) and becomes melee-attackable. The most intense phase:
- Dark Flame continues — always dodge the cone.
- Class Calls increase in frequency.
- Chaotic Fire — periodic DoT on a random player (~1000 dmg/sec).
- Shadow Flame — 180° frontal cone; wipes the raid without shadow resistance.
Raid Composition
| Role | Count | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Tanks | 3–4 | MT on Nefarian, OTs on skeletons |
| Healers | 9–12 | Split into MT/raid/reserve groups |
| Melee DPS | 8–12 | Watch for Veil of Shadow — spread out |
| Ranged DPS | 12–15 | Position away from the cone |
x5 server tip: On WowX5, faster gear progression makes Nefarian more accessible, but the mechanics are identical. Shadow resistance on healers (150+) and knowing your Class Call are non-negotiable.
Gear Requirements
- Shadow Resistance: 150+ for healers, 100+ for DPS.
- Fire Resistance: 150+ for tanks (Chaotic Fire).
- Consumables: Fire Protection Potions, Flask of the Titans, mage food, powerful heals.
- Enchants: Shadow Resist enchants on cloak and gear.

Strategy for WowX5 x5 Server
On x5, raiders gear up faster but Nefarian's mechanics demand the same discipline:
1. Clear skeletons fast — the first 60–90 seconds are critical. 2. Split healers into groups of 3–4: MT group, raid group, backup group. 3. Know your Class Call — especially Priests (healing → damage) and Mages (mana drain). 4. Positioning: stand behind Nefarian during the ground phase; spread out during Veil of Shadow. 5. Shadow Resist: mandatory — without it, Shadow Flame wipes the entire raid.

FAQ
How many BWL clears does it take to kill Nefarian? Average 3–6 clears for a well-coordinated raid. On x5, progression is significantly faster.
Is Drake Fang Talisman really BiS? Yes, for most melee DPS (Warrior, Rogue, Hunter) it is one of the best trinkets in all of Vanilla WoW.
What should a Priest do during Class Call? Stop healing immediately — any heal will damage the target instead. Spam damage spells or simply wait out the ~5 second effect.
Can Nefarian be killed without Tier 2? Technically yes, but significantly harder. T2+ gear and solid shadow resistance are the practical minimums for consistent clears.
