Firemaw: tactics and loot for WoW x5
Vanilla WoW Classic 1.12 · x5 realm · wowx5.ruWho Is Firemaw
Firemaw is the fourth boss of Blackwing Lair and the first of the three wing drakes (Firemaw, Ebonroc, Flamegor). All three share their base mechanics, but each has its own twist. Firemaw tests the raid's fire resistance and its positioning.
His defining ability is Wing Buffet: a wing flap that knocks back everyone in front and drops threat. On top of that, Flame Buffet stacks and raises fire damage taken. The fight is about Fire Resistance and a clean dead zone.
Raid Requirements
| Parameter | Value |
|---|---|
| Type | 40-player raid |
| Min level | 60 |
| Recommended | Fire Resistance gear on the raid |
| Mandatory | 2 tanks, a practiced dead zone |
| Consumables | Fire Protection Potion, Greater Fire Protection |
Fight Mechanics
One continuous fight focused on positioning and fire resistance.
| Ability | Effect | Raid response |
|---|---|---|
| Shadow Flame | Powerful frontal cone breath, heavy DoT | No one in front except the tank outside the cone |
| Flame Buffet | Stacking +fire damage on everyone in line of sight | Fire Resistance, minimal players in front |
| Wing Buffet | Knocks back everyone in front + drops tank threat | Dead zone, off-tank taunt |
| Fire debuff | Periodic fire damage on the raid | Healers cover the raid, FR sets cut damage |
The dead zone and Fire Resistance
Wing Buffet drops threat and knocks the tank back every few seconds. To keep the dragon from bolting to the ranged, tanks hold him in a dead zone — a distance where control is quickly regained after the knockback and the second tank is ready to taunt. Meanwhile the raid wears Fire Resistance to cut damage from Flame Buffet and the breath.
No one but the tank should stand in Firemaw's frontal arc: Shadow Flame mows down everyone in the cone in seconds. Melee hit strictly from the back/side, ranged from behind the dragon.
Step-by-Step Tactics
1. Wear Fire Resistance. Even a partial FR set sharply reduces Flame Buffet and breath damage. 2. Hold the dead zone. The MT positions Firemaw so Wing Buffet does not carry him into the raid; the off-tank stays on threat. 3. Hit from behind. Melee strictly behind/side, outside Shadow Flame; ranged and healers behind the dragon. 4. Watch Flame Buffet. At high stacks on a front-liner, rotate/step out so the debuff falls off. 5. Steady DPS. Hold damage and threat control; no phases — just a clean fight to the death.
Raid Composition
| Role | Count | Job |
|---|---|---|
| Main Tank | 1 | Holds the dragon in the dead zone |
| Off Tank | 1 | Taunts after Wing Buffet |
| Healers | 8–10 | Raid + tank, offset the fire |
| Melee DPS | 10–14 | Damage strictly back/side |
| Ranged DPS | 12–16 | Damage from behind the dragon |
Firemaw Loot
| Item | Type | For whom |
|---|---|---|
| Tier 2 token | Token | Tier 2 pieces (shared drake pool) |
| Firemaw's Clutch | Waist | Casters — spell damage belt |
| Malfurion's Blessed Bulwark | Leather Chest | Druid — strong chest |
| Rejuvenating Gem | Trinket | Healers — mana and healing |
The three wing drakes (Firemaw, Ebonroc, Flamegor) drop an overlapping Tier 2 and unique-item pool — so they are always farmed together in one run.
Tips for WoW x5
On x5 the fight is shorter, but Fire Resistance pays off at any rate:
Even a partial FR set (neck, rings, cloak + a couple of slots) noticeably eases the healers' job against Flame Buffet. Do not ignore fire resistance on the BWL drakes.
On x5 tanks build threat fast, but Wing Buffet still drops aggro — keep the off-tank ready so the dragon never slips toward the raid for even a second.
The next wing drake is Ebonroc. The full route is in the Blackwing Lair guide. To join, register on wowx5.ru.
FAQ
How does Firemaw's Wing Buffet work?
Wing Buffet is a wing flap that knocks back everyone in front of the dragon and drops threat from the tank. To keep Firemaw from flying into the raid, tanks use a dead zone: the tank holds him so control is quickly regained after the knockback, and the off-tank backs up on threat.
What is Flame Buffet?
Flame Buffet is a stacking debuff that increases fire damage taken and hits everyone in the dragon's line of sight. Counter it with Fire Resistance gear and by keeping extra players out of Firemaw's frontal zone.
What loot drops from Firemaw?
Firemaw drops Tier 2 pieces (tokens for various slots), the caster belt Firemaw's Clutch, the leather chest Malfurion's Blessed Bulwark for druids and the Rejuvenating Gem trinket. The three wing drakes share a common Tier 2 pool.
