Blackwing Lair (BWL): Complete Raid Guide

Vanilla WoW Classic 1.12 · x5 realm · wowx5.ru

Blackwing Lair (BWL) is the second major 40-man raid of WoW Classic Vanilla, located in the upper reaches of Blackrock Mountain. BWL is significantly harder than Molten Core and demands a well-coordinated raid with adequate fire resistance and clear understanding of mechanics. Tier 2 drops here — some of the best raid sets before AQ40.

BWL Attunement

Entry requires completing the quest "Nefarius" (For The Horde / For The Alliance): 1. Kill General Drakkisath in UBRS (Upper Blackrock Spire). 2. Loot Drakkisath's Brand (item from kill). 3. Turn in the quest in Orgrimmar (Horde) or Stormwind (Alliance). 4. Receive the Orb of Draconic Energy — BWL entry key.

Every raid member must complete attunement — no entry without it.

Fire Resistance and Shadow Resistance

Fire Resistance is critical in BWL — especially for the Chromaggus encounter which uses multiple breath types.

Raid Composition for BWL

40 people:

  • 8–10 tanks (2–3 MTs, 5–7 offtanks for dragonkin and adds)
  • 16–18 healers (BWL demands more healing than MC)
  • 12–16 DPS

Key classes:

  • Warlocks — decurse Dragon-Curse (Vaelastrasz), add control
  • Hunters — kite Chromaggus
  • Mages — Polymorph adds
  • Priests — special priority during Nefarian's class call

Route and Bosses

1. Razorgore the Untamed

First boss with the most unique mechanic in BWL. Razorgore cannot be killed directly — he must be controlled via an orb.

Tactic: 1. One player picks up the Controlling Orb and pilots Razorgore, destroying eggs. 2. The raid kills adds while the orb-player destroys all 30 eggs. 3. After all eggs are destroyed Razorgore becomes an enemy — kill him.

x5 Tip: On x5 rates adds die faster. The orb-player can focus on eggs without distraction.

2. Vaelastrasz the Corrupt

Possibly the most sudden boss. Vaelastrasz applies Burning Adrenaline to several players: they have 20 seconds to use all abilities and die (or run away from the raid).

Tactic:

  • Tank near a wall, away from the raid.
  • Players with Burning Adrenaline immediately move out.
  • Kill the boss quickly — solid DPS speed is essential.

3. Broodlord Lashlayer

Stands behind a fire barrier, deactivated through a mechanism. Broodlord uses Mortal Strike — healers must watch the tank's health carefully.

4. Firemaw

One of the "winged trio" — three dragon siblings (Firemaw/Ebonroc/Flamegor). Firemaw uses Wing Buffet (knockback) and Flame Buffet (stacking fire debuff). Tank rotation required.

5. Ebonroc and 6. Flamegor

Similar to Firemaw; Ebonroc adds Shadow of Ebonroc (boss heals from attacks on the target). Flamegor adds Frenzy. Kill order: Firemaw → Flamegor → Ebonroc.

7. Chromaggus

Technically the most complex boss. Chromaggus has 5 breath types (randomly selects 2 per raid). Each type requires corresponding resistance. Additionally applies 5 Brood Affliction debuffs — must be removed with specialized items (Brood Affliction).

Required:

  • High Fire Resist (200+) and Shadow Resist (150–200)
  • Large supply of Blood of the Black Dragon Champion (Brood Affliction cure)

8. Nefarian — Final Boss

Three-phase encounter. Nefarian is BWL's main antagonist, son of Deathwing.

Phase 1: Nefarian airborne — waves of skeletons attack the raid. Kill skeletons, maintain position.

Phase 2: Nefarian lands. Uses Class Call every 30 seconds — applies a class-specific debilitating ability to each class. Tanks and healers must know their class call.

Class Call examples:

  • Warriors → forced Berserker Stance
  • Priests → Shadowweave (drains mana)
  • Hunters → Pet goes berserk, attacks raiders

Phase 3: At low HP Nefarian summons Drakonids (skeleton adds). Kill them quickly and finish Nefarian.
