A dungeon needs one tank; a raid almost never does. Bosses stack a growing debuff on the tank, summon adds, cast AoE — and that is where the main tank and off-tanks come in. Here is how they differ, why tank swaps exist and how to build a taunt rotation in WoW Classic 1.12.

Совет

Tank swaps are needed where a boss stacks a debuff on the tank (a growing hit, for example). The second tank taunts at the dangerous stack, the first steps out until it falls off. A taunt resets the threat gap, so the off-tank must already sit at second on threat.

Main tank: holds the primary target

The main tank (MT) is the raid's primary tank:

  • builds and holds maximum threat on the boss;
  • sits at the defense cap so the boss cannot crit-burst them down;
  • faces the boss away from the raid and holds position (see the base tank guide).

The strongest healers are put on the MT — their death usually means a wipe.

Off-tank: adds and backup

The off-tank (OT) handles everything that is not the main boss:

  • catches and holds adds marked with raid marks;
  • picks up the boss on a tank swap or if the MT dies;
  • holds second on threat so it can grab the target at any moment.

Vanilla's best tanks are the warrior (MT) and the bear druid (reliable OT). Paladins and shamans are not raid tanks.

Tank swaps

Many bosses stack a growing debuff on the tank — an escalating physical hit or a stack that eventually kills. The fix is a tank swap:

StepAction
1MT holds the boss, debuff grows
2At the dangerous stack the OT taunts
3MT steps out, the debuff fades
4At the next threshold they swap back

Example — a boss with a growing hit in BWL/AQ40: without a swap the tank dies to a single crit.

Taunt rotation and threat

  • a taunt forces aggro for 3 hits and equalises the off-tank's threat to the current target;
  • so the OT must be second on threat, or the boss leaves for the DPS after the force ends;
  • on adds the off-tank uses its own threat rotation and faces the target away from the raid;
  • healers know in advance who to heal after the swap (a job for healers and the raid leader).

FAQ

How does a main tank differ from an off-tank

The main tank holds the primary target — the boss — and gets the best healing. The off-tank catches adds, holds second on threat and picks up the boss on tank swaps.

Why are tank swaps needed

Many bosses stack a growing debuff on the tank. A second tank taunts at the dangerous stack while the first steps out until it fades — otherwise the tank dies.

Who can off-tank in vanilla

A warrior or a bear-form druid works best. Paladins and shamans hold threat poorly and do not serve as raid tanks.
