WoW Classic Defense Cap: 440 and Crit Immunity
Vanilla WoW Classic 1.12 · x5 realm · wowx5.ru# WoW Classic Defense Cap: 440 and Crit Immunity
The defense cap is the number every tank in WoW Classic lives by. The goal is to make the tank crit-immune to bosses, because a crit on the tank is double damage that, paired with a big boss swing, kills in seconds. The magic number is 440.
Why 440
A boss (level 63) has a base 5.6% crit chance against a level-60 player. Each point of defense skill above the base 300 lowers the enemy crit chance by 0.04%. To remove 5.6%:
5.6% ÷ 0.04% = 140 defense points. Base 300 + 140 = 440 defense skill.
At 440 defense the boss's crit against you = 0%. This is called being uncrittable — a mandatory state for a main tank on bosses.
| Defense skill | Boss crit on you |
|---|---|
| 300 (base) | 5.6% |
| 370 | 2.8% |
| 440 | 0% (cap) |
No need to fear boss crushes
A common confusion with TBC: there, bosses do crush and you gear against it. In Vanilla a crushing blow is only possible from a +4 mob and above, while bosses are +3, so bosses do not crush a properly-leveled tank (level 60). That reduces the whole task to one thing: 440 defense for crit immunity. More in the attack table.
Defense gives more than crit protection
Each point above 300 simultaneously:
- −0.04% to enemy crit chance (the main goal — down to zero at cap);
- +0.04% to your dodge, parry, block and enemy miss.
So the 140 points to cap are also a noticeable boost to avoidance and block. Where to get defense: shield, enchants (Zandalar/head), tank sets, defense rings/trinkets, the warrior's Anticipation talent.
Tank stat order
1. Defense to 440 (uncrittable) — absolute priority. 2. Stamina — a health buffer for unexpected hits. 3. Armor — physical mitigation, see the armor formula. 4. Dodge/parry/block and threat — threat to hold aggro.
On x5 gearing is fast, but do not main-tank bosses below 440 defense — a single crit can cost a wipe. Cross-check your class tank set and consumables.
FAQ
How much defense does a tank need?
440 defense skill. It removes a boss's 5.6% crit chance (level 63) down to zero — the tank becomes crit-immune. Beyond that, defense keeps adding dodge, parry and block.
Do bosses crush if you're under the defense cap?
No. Crushing blows come only from +4 mobs and above; bosses are +3, so they don't crush. The danger of under-capping defense is boss crits (double damage), which can kill in a couple of swings.
What does each defense point above 300 give?
Each defense point above the base 300 gives +0.04% dodge, parry, block and enemy miss, and −0.04% to the enemy's crit chance against you. 140 points (up to 440) remove a boss's 5.6% crit.
