WoW Classic Attack Table: One Roll and Crushing Blows
Vanilla WoW Classic 1.12 · x5 realm · wowx5.ru# WoW Classic Attack Table: One Roll and Crushing Blows
The attack table is the heart of all physical combat in WoW Classic. Every attack is decided by a single roll on one 0–100 scale, not a series of independent checks. Understand it and you understand why +hit is so valuable and why bosses never crush.
One roll for the whole outcome
The game makes one 0–100 roll and walks the table top to bottom. The first band the roll lands in decides the result — there is no second roll:
| Order | Outcome | Note |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Miss | Removed by +hit |
| 2 | Dodge | Only if the target can dodge |
| 3 | Parry | Target must face you |
| 4 | Glancing | White swings vs higher-level target only |
| 5 | Block | Needs a shield; reduces damage by block value |
| 6 | Crit | Double damage |
| 7 | Crushing | +50% damage; only from +4 mobs and above |
| 8 | Hit | Whatever is left of the scale |
The key consequence: everything shares one 100% scale. If miss and glancing take up a lot of room, they eat into your crit share. That is why +hit is so valuable for DPS — it not only removes misses but shifts the table toward crits.
Glancing blows
A glancing blow is a white (auto) attack against a higher-level target with reduced damage. Versus a boss (+3) the glancing chance is fixed around 40% and cannot be removed with hit. It can only be softened by weapon skill: at 300 skill glancing cuts more, at 305 (+5 from race/enchant) noticeably less. Glancing never affects yellow (special) attacks — which is why warriors value Bloodthirst and Whirlwind so highly.
Crushing blows
A crushing blow deals +50% damage and is only possible when the attacking mob is 4 or more levels above the target. Raid bosses are level 63, i.e. +3 over a level-60 player, so bosses do not crush a properly-leveled tank. Crushing only matters versus +4 elites (some trash, world mobs). This is a key difference from TBC, where bosses do crush.
What to do about it
- DPS: reach the hit cap and keep weapon skill at 305 — this shifts the table toward crits and softens glancing.
- Tanks: no need to fear boss crushes; the priority is removing crits via the 440 defense cap.
- Understanding the table explains why rotations are built around special hits that ignore glancing.
FAQ
Do bosses land crushing blows on the tank?
No. A crushing blow is only possible when the mob is 4+ levels above you. Bosses are level 63 (+3 over a level-60 player), so they do NOT crush a properly-leveled tank. Crushing matters versus +4 elites and above.
What is a glancing blow?
A glancing blow is an auto-attack with reduced damage against a higher-level target. Versus a boss (+3) the glancing chance is ~40% and cannot be removed, only softened by weapon skill. Glancing never affects yellow (special) hits.
Why can't a single hit both miss and crit?
Vanilla uses one 0–100 scale for the whole outcome. One die roll walks the table in order: miss→dodge→parry→glancing→block→crit→crush→hit. Whatever comes first is what happens.
