Swing timer — the rhythm of your auto-attack
Vanilla WoW Classic 1.12 · x5 realm · wowx5.ruThe swing timer is the countdown to your next weapon auto-attack in WoW Classic. Its length equals weapon speed: when the countdown hits zero the character swings and the timer restarts. Auto-attacks run off the global cooldown — they flow in parallel with your abilities.
Weapon speed is the interval between auto-attacks, not a "damage frequency". A slow two-hander swings rarely but for a big number per hit; that's why it pairs better with on-next-swing abilities and damage multipliers.
Weapon speed and auto-attack
| Weapon | Typical speed | Rhythm |
|---|---|---|
| Two-hander | 3.3–3.8 sec | rare heavy hits |
| One-hander | 2.4–2.8 sec | medium rhythm |
| Dagger | 1.5–1.8 sec | frequent light hits |
Speed affects more than auto-attacks: it drives the combat formulas — ability damage normalisation, glancing-blow chance and rage generation from each swing.
On-next-swing abilities
Some warrior abilities — Heroic Strike and Cleave — don't trigger the global cooldown and don't hit instantly. Instead they queue onto the next auto-attack, replacing the normal swing with a stronger one. So they're best queued under a slow weapon: one heavy swing becomes a powerful hit and rage is spent more efficiently.
Swing reset on weapon swap
A dangerous subtlety: swapping weapons in combat resets the swing timer. It restarts at the new weapon's full speed and the next hit is delayed — pure lost damage. So weapons and on-hit trinkets are swapped before the fight or in pauses, not mid-attack. Instant abilities do not reset the swing.
Dual-wield: separate timers
When dual-wielding, each hand has its own swing timer. Main and off hand swing independently, with a damage penalty on off-hand hits. Their swings periodically line up for a damage burst — something rogues and dual-wield warriors account for. This is all part of the wider combat mechanics and combat effects picture.
Swing timer on the WowX5 x5 server
On WowX5 x5 the swing timer follows classic rules: the same weapon speed, the same reset on swap, the same on-next-swing hits. Understanding the auto-attack rhythm noticeably raises your damage in raids like Molten Core.

FAQ
What is the swing timer in WoW Classic?
The swing timer is the countdown to your next weapon auto-attack. Its length equals weapon speed: a slow two-hander swings every 3.5–3.8 seconds, a fast dagger every 1.6. Auto-attacks run off the global cooldown.
Why shouldn't I swap weapons in combat?
Swapping weapons mid-fight resets the swing timer: it restarts at the new weapon's full speed and the next hit is delayed. That loses damage, so weapons are swapped before the fight or during pauses.
How do on-next-swing abilities work?
The warrior's Heroic Strike and Cleave don't trigger the global cooldown and don't hit instantly — they queue onto the next auto-attack, replacing it with a stronger hit. So they're best queued under a slow weapon.
