# WoW Classic Dodge, Parry and Block: Avoidance Mechanics

Dodge, parry and block are the three forms of damage avoidance in WoW Classic. They sit in the attack table right after miss and decide how much damage a tank actually takes. It's important to understand the difference between them and the sneaky parry-haste.

Three kinds of avoidance

MechanicEffectCondition
DodgeFull negation (0 damage)Front/side; scales with agility and defense
ParryFull negation (0 damage)Frontal attacks only; grants enemy parry-haste
BlockDamage − block valueNeeds a shield; frontal

Dodge and parry remove the hit entirely. Block only subtracts a fixed block value (from shield and strength) — a small share against a big boss hit, but meaningful protection against frequent weak trash hits.

Parry-haste — the sneaky trap

When a mob parries a player's hit, the timer of its next auto-attack speeds up (up to −40% to the next swing). For a tank this means: the more slow hits you land into the boss's face, the more often you may trigger accelerated counter-swings — a 'parry gib' risk (two fast hits in a row killing you between heals). In practice it's rarely critical on Vanilla bosses, but it explains why mindlessly spamming very slow attacks as a tank is discouraged.

The role of defense in avoidance

Each point of defense skill above 300 gives +0.04% dodge, parry, block and enemy miss. So the road to 440 defense (crit immunity) also raises all avoidance. Additionally:

  • Agility — raises dodge (class-dependent) and armor.
  • Block talent/enchant and a good shield — raise block frequency and value.
  • Dodge/Parry from items — direct avoidance gains.

What matters for a tank

1. 440 defense — crit immunity first (see the defense cap). 2. Stamina and armoreffective health against 'spiky' damage. 3. Avoidance (dodge/parry/block) — cuts average incoming damage, easing the healers' job. 4. Threatthreat to keep the boss on you.

Avoidance is 'soft' mitigation: it doesn't guarantee surviving a specific swing (unlike health and armor), but it lowers healing strain over time. Balancing avoidance and 'effective health' is the essence of a tank build. Cross-check your class tank set.

FAQ

How do dodge, parry and block differ?

Dodge and parry fully negate a hit (zero damage); block only reduces damage by the block value and needs a shield. Parry works only against frontal attacks; dodge works from the front and sides.

What is parry-haste and why is it dangerous?

When a mob parries your hit, its next swing speeds up. A tank attacking a boss often can trigger faster boss counter-swings — raising the risk of a 'parry gib'. So on some fights you avoid spamming slow attacks into the boss's face.

Should a tank stack avoidance past the defense cap?

First 440 defense (crit immunity), then dodge/parry/block as 'soft' average-damage reduction. Block is especially valuable against frequent small hits, dodge is universal.
