WoW Classic Spell Power Coefficients and Downranking
Vanilla WoW Classic 1.12 · x5 realm · wowx5.ru# WoW Classic Spell Power Coefficients and Downranking
The spell power coefficient explains why the same +spell power affects different spells differently and why experienced healers 'downrank'. Let's cover the formula and its main practical consequence.
The coefficient formula
Spell power (+spell power) is added to a spell not in full, but via a coefficient:
- Direct damage/heal: coefficient = cast time ÷ 3.5 (capped at a 3.5s cast = 100%). Instant and short-cast spells get a smaller share.
- Periodic (DoT/HoT): coefficient = duration ÷ 15, and the bonus is spread across every tick.
- Channeled use the full channel time.
| Spell | Cast/duration | Coefficient |
|---|---|---|
| Fireball (3.5s) | 3.5s | 100% |
| Shadow Bolt (3.0s) | 3.0s | ~85.7% |
| Frostbolt (3.0s) | 3.0s | ~81% (reduced for its slow) |
| Corruption (18s DoT) | 18s | ~120% (split over ticks) |
Downranking — the main takeaway
The coefficient is based on the rank's base cast time, not its 'power'. So a low rank keeps almost the same coefficient of your spell power while costing far less mana. Hence the classic tactics:
- Healers keep several ranks of Healing Touch / Greater Heal / Flash Heal and pick the rank per situation: a big rank when the 'tank is dropping', a low rank + all your +healing to top the group off. This drastically saves mana.
- DoT casters sometimes avoid refreshing a DoT early because the bonus is already 'baked' into the ticks.
The very-low-rank penalty
Spells whose rank is available below level 20 get an additional coefficient reduction (about −0.0375 per level under 20). So you downrank to a reasonable rank (usually one available around level 20+), not to the very first — otherwise +spell power almost stops working.
What it changes in your build
1. Spell power — the main multiplier past the 16% hit cap. 2. Long casts value +spell power more (higher coefficient) — a factor in rotation choice. 3. Healer mana efficiency is first of all rank discipline, not only spirit/mp5.
Next: the caster and healer rotations and consumables and world buffs for the raid.
FAQ
How does spell power apply to damage?
Through a coefficient. For direct damage the coefficient = cast time ÷ 3.5 (maxed at a 3.5s cast = 100% of spell power). For DoTs the coefficient = duration ÷ 15, spread across ticks.
What is downranking and why do it?
Downranking is casting a lower rank of a spell. The spell power coefficient is based on the base cast time and barely drops with rank, so a low rank keeps most of the +spell power bonus while costing less mana. It's the key to mana-efficient healing.
Is there a penalty on very low ranks?
Yes. Spells available below level 20 have an additional coefficient reduction (~0.0375 per level under 20). So you downrank to a reasonable rank, not to rank 1.
