# WoW Classic Armor: Physical Damage Reduction Formula

Armor is the core physical mitigation stat in WoW Classic. It grants no 'dodges'; it evenly shaves a percentage off every physical hit. The formula is simple and worth memorizing for any tank or anyone who wants to understand survivability.

The reduction formula

Physical damage reduction is calculated as:

Reduction = Armor ÷ (Armor + 400 + 85 × attacker_level)

Versus a level-63 boss: 400 + 85 × 63 = 5755. So:

Reduction = Armor ÷ (Armor + 5755)

ArmorReduction vs level 63
2,000~25.8%
4,000~41.0%
5,75550.0%
8,000~58.2%
12,000~67.6%

The 75% cap

Physical reduction cannot exceed 75%. Versus level 63 that cap is reached around 17,265 armor — barely gatherable in Vanilla gear, so armor doesn't 'cap out' and stays useful almost always. Key takeaway: armor has no diminishing returns in survivability terms — each point removes the same absolute damage (effective health grows linearly).

Armor versus attacker level

Note the denominator uses the attacker's level. The same armor gives more reduction against a low-level mob and less against a level-63 boss. That's why tank math is always done against level 63 — the raid 'worst case'.

What armor does and doesn't do

  • Does: evenly reduce every physical hit, including glancing and crushing.
  • Doesn't: protect against magic (Shadow Flame, Ragnaros's fire, etc.) — only elemental resistances help there.
  • Doesn't remove crits — that's the 440 defense cap.

Priority for tanks

Armor is important but not first: reach 440 defense (crit immunity) and a stamina buffer first, then stack armor as 'effective health', and mind threat in parallel. Armor sources: plate sets, shield, armor enchant, an armor scroll/potion from consumables. Cross-check your class tank set.

FAQ

How is armor damage reduction calculated?

Reduction = Armor ÷ (Armor + 400 + 85 × attacker level). Versus a level-63 boss the denominator is Armor + 5755. For example 5755 armor gives 50% physical damage reduction.

Is there an armor cap?

Yes, physical damage reduction cannot exceed 75%. Versus level 63 that cap is reached around 17,265 armor — almost never gathered in practice, so armor stays useful.

Does armor protect against spells?

No. Armor reduces only physical damage (melee, ranged). Magic is mitigated by elemental resistances — see the separate resistance mechanics guide.
