A taunt is an ability that forces a monster to attack you immediately and pulls your threat up to the top of the table. It is the tank's main tool to reclaim a mob that peeled onto a DPS or healer. But a taunt is not all-powerful: it has a cooldown and important limits you must know.

Совет

A taunt does not create threat forever — it only sets you equal to the current leader. If you do not add threat with abilities right after taunting, the mob leaves again toward whoever out-threated you.

How a taunt works

A taunt does two things at once: it forces the monster to attack you for a few seconds and sets your threat equal to the table's current leader. While the effect lasts, the mob hits the tank regardless of the numbers.

The key nuance: a taunt gives no permanent lead. It only levels threat 'in the moment'. So right after a taunt the tank must top off threat with abilities (Sunder Armor, Heroic Strike), or in a couple of seconds the mob turns back to its former aggressor.

Taunts by class

In WoW Classic the set of taunts is small and belongs almost entirely to the warrior and pets:

AbilityClassType
TauntWarriorsingle, short cooldown
Mocking BlowWarriorsingle + damage, long cooldown
Challenging ShoutWarriorarea, very long cooldown
Growlhunter petsingle beast taunt
Challenging RoarDruidarea (bear)

The paladin has no true taunt in Vanilla — they hold a group with area threat (Consecration, Holy damage) rather than a taunt.

Single and area taunts

Taunts split into two kinds:

  • Single (Taunt, Mocking Blow, Growl) — reclaim one specific mob. The main tool on bosses and on the priority target.
  • Area (warrior Challenging Shout, druid Challenging Roar) — taunt every enemy around at once, but on a very long cooldown. This is the 'panic button' when a pack has scattered onto the healer and DPS.

Save the area taunt for a true emergency: waste it and the tank is left without insurance for the next minutes of the fight.

Taunt limitations

A taunt cannot be used mindlessly:

  • It has a cooldown — between taunts the tank must actually hold threat with abilities, not live button to button.
  • A taunt does not work on players (there is none in PvP) and on some special creatures with immunity.
  • It can miss a higher-level target — like a normal attack, a taunt is checked to hit.

So an experienced tank holds the mob with threat and uses the taunt as a backup, not as the main way to keep hold.

Taunts on the WowX5 x5 server

On WowX5 x5 the taunt mechanic is classic: the same cooldown taunt, the same 'level and top off with threat' principle. Reclaiming a peeled mob in time saves raids in Molten Core and Onyxia.

FAQ

How does a taunt work in WoW Classic?

A taunt forces the mob to attack the tank for a few seconds and sets the tank's threat equal to the current table leader. It grants no permanent lead — right after the taunt you must top off threat with abilities.

Who has a taunt in Vanilla?

Full taunts belong to the warrior (Taunt, Mocking Blow, Challenging Shout), the hunter pet (Growl) and the bear druid (Challenging Roar). The paladin has no taunt — it holds mobs with area threat.

Why does the mob leave right after a taunt?

A taunt only sets the tank's threat equal to the leader for a short time. If you do not add threat with abilities, once the effect ends the mob turns back to whoever has more threat.
