The tank is the group's shield: it holds the monsters' attention so damage never reaches the fragile members. In WoW Classic the best tank is the warrior in Defensive Stance, while a bear-form druid makes a solid off-tank. A good tank is not the one who hits hardest but the one who holds threat reliably and never lets mobs jump to the healer. Below are the core mechanics, priorities and rookie mistakes.

Совет

Remember the threat rule: to rip aggro in melee an ally needs 110% of your threat, and 130% at range or with spells. So the tank needs a head start: build threat in the first seconds and let DPS hold burst for 3–5 seconds after the pull. Details are in the threat mechanics guide.

What a tank does

The tank's job is controlling the monsters' attention:

  • keep every mob of the pack on itself, facing them away from the group;
  • generate more threat than the DPS deal so the target never slips;
  • soften damage with armor, block and dodge to ease the healer's work;
  • taunt off dangerous casts and catch runaway mobs.

In vanilla real tanking is done by warriors (the best option) and bear druids. Paladins and shamans hold threat poorly and are not raid tanks.

Threat mechanics and rotation

Everything a tank does revolves around threat. The basic warrior rotation in Defensive Stance:

AbilityRole
Sunder Armormain threat and armor debuff
Revengecheap threat after a block or parry
Heroic Strikedumps excess rage into threat
Tauntforce-aggro, saving an ally
Mocking Blowa second taunt on cooldown

A bear druid holds aggro with Growl, Swipe on the pack and Maul. The number crunching is in the threat guide.

Mitigation: armor, block, defense

A tank reduces incoming damage three ways:

  • Armor — cuts physical damage; detailed in the armor mitigation guide.
  • Dodge, parry, block — chances to avoid a hit; see the avoidance mechanics.
  • Defense — a skill lowering the chance to be crit and crushed. Against raid bosses you push defense to the crit-immunity threshold — see the defense cap guide.

For magic-damage raids prepare a resistance set.

Rookie mistakes

  • Pulling the whole room — a tank holds as many mobs as the healer can sustain; extras are handled by crowd control.
  • Chasing damage — a tank builds threat, not top DPS; Defensive Stance lowers damage anyway.
  • No facing — keep the boss and mobs facing away from the group to avoid cleaves and sunders.
  • Rage starvation — rage is low on the pull, build it with Sunder and Revenge, don't dump it all into Heroic Strike.

FAQ

Who is the best tank in WoW Classic

The best vanilla tank is the warrior in Defensive Stance. A bear-form druid off-tanks reliably, while paladins and shamans are not suited to raid tanking.

How does a tank hold aggro

A tank builds threat with Sunder Armor, Revenge and Heroic Strike and keeps a lead over the DPS. To rip aggro an ally needs 110% of the tank's threat in melee and 130% at range.

What is the defense cap for a tank

It is the defense skill threshold at which a raid boss can no longer land critical hits on the tank. Stacking defense and armor makes incoming damage predictable for healers.
