Hunter Pet Happiness and Loyalty: Feeding, Diets and Training Points
Pet happiness and pet loyalty are two hidden scales that in WoW 1.12.1 decide your beast's damage, its number of training points and even whether it stays with the hunter at all. On the WoW x5 server levels come fast, and a hungry pet quietly cuts your damage by a quarter. Here is how to keep your beast fed and loyal.

Happiness Levels and Damage
The happiness indicator is shown on the pet portrait. There are three states:
| State | Color | Pet damage | Loyalty effect |
|---|---|---|---|
| Happy | green | 125% | grows |
| Content | yellow | 100% | does not drop, but feed it up to green |
| Unhappy | red | 75% | drops |
Happiness slowly decays over time and faster in combat. A freshly tamed beast is always unhappy and disloyal, so feed it immediately after taming — the ability tooltip reminds you of that too. Getting your first pet is covered in the Taming the Beast guide, and the general reference is the article on hunter pets.
Feeding: Feed Pet
Feed Pet is available from level 10. Select it and click a food item in your bags — the beast eats it and gains happiness over a few seconds. The main rules:
- Food by diet. Each family eats only its own food types, the pet will refuse anything else.
- Food level. The closer the food level is to the pet level, the more happiness one piece gives. A high level beast will not eat food that is too low level.
- Feed in advance. Keep the pet green before a dungeon or raid, not when it has already turned red.
A convenient food source is your own cooking or innkeeper vendors.
◆Diets by Family
| Family | Eats |
|---|---|
| Cat, Carrion Bird, Crocolisk | meat, fish |
| Wolf, Raptor, Owl, Spider, Scorpid | meat only |
| Hyena | meat, fruit |
| Bear, Boar | meat, fish, bread, cheese, fruit, fungus |
| Crab | fish, bread, fruit, fungus |
| Turtle | fish, fruit, fungus |
| Bat, Gorilla | fruit, fungus |
| Tallstrider | cheese, fruit, fungus |
| Wind Serpent | fish, bread, cheese |
Omnivorous bears and boars are the easiest beasts to level with; carnivores such as the wolf need you to carry meat. A comparison of families by damage and survivability is in the list of best hunter pets.
Loyalty and Its Levels
Loyalty shows how attached the beast is to the hunter. There are six steps: Rebellious, Unruly, Submissive, Dependable, Faithful and Best Friend. Loyalty grows with time spent together and with fights while the pet is well fed. If it stays unhappy for long, loyalty goes down.
What Happens When the Pet Is Unhappy
A red indicator means more than a quarter less damage. While the beast is unhappy it loses loyalty, and when loyalty hits the bottom the pet runs away for good along with all the abilities it has learned. That makes the first hours after taming the most dangerous time: loyalty is still minimal and your food supply runs out quickly.
◆Training Points
Training points are spent to teach the pet abilities at the beast training master. Their number depends on the pet level and loyalty: at the lowest loyalty step there are none, and every further step raises the pool. That is why a faithful high level beast can carry more ability ranks than a freshly tamed one. What to learn and when is covered in hunter pet abilities, and the energy for those abilities is explained in pet focus.
Healing, Reviving and Summoning
| Ability | Level | How it works |
|---|---|---|
| Mend Pet | 12 | 5 second channel, heals the pet every second |
| Revive Pet | 10 | 10 second cast, revives the beast with 15% health |
| Call Pet | 10 | instantly summons a dismissed pet |
| Dismiss Pet | 10 | 5 second cast, reduces happiness by 50 |
Do not dismiss the pet without a reason: each trip home costs some happiness, so feed the beast right after calling it back.
Put Feed Pet on its own action bar button, and check the rules for building macros in hunter macros. One click before a pull keeps the beast green all evening.
