AoE farming (area of effect) is the signature mage technique where you gather a whole pack of mobs into one spot and kill them all at once with area spells. It is one of the fastest ways to earn gold in WoW Classic: a single cycle drops loot from a dozen enemies at once.

Совет

AoE farming is unforgiving of mistakes: one missed root and the pack hits you from all sides. Start with a small number of mobs and grow the pack only once you are confident in your Frost Nova timing.

How AoE farming works

The idea is simple: the mage runs through a zone, tags many mobs, drags them into a tight cluster, roots them with Frost Nova and burns them down with area spells. While the enemies stand frozen, you land lethal damage on all of them at once.

The cycle repeats: gather a fresh pack, freeze it, burn it, collect the loot. In the time an ordinary player kills one mob, the mage drops eight to ten. That is why AoE farming is prized for cloth, enchanting mats and plain gold.

Key spells

AoE farming needs a frost-fire toolkit:

  • Frost Nova is the heart of the technique: it roots every enemy around you, buying time for damage.
  • Blink teleports through the pack to break free if the root fades.
  • Blast Wave and Arcane Explosion are your main area damage.
  • Ice Barrier and Ice Block are the safety net if the pack starts to hit.

Without points in the frost tree for slows and Blink, the talent build makes the technique less safe — those talents are the foundation of farming survival.

Best AoE spots

A good pack is many small mobs close together, ideally non-elite and without dangerous spells:

LocationWhat to farmDrops
Maraudonearth elementalsstones, ore, gold
Zul'Farraktroll dogscloth, money
Eastern PlaguelandsScourgerunecloth
Stranglethorn Valenaga, murlocscloth, leather

Pick places where mobs do not cast and do not flee in fear — otherwise the pack scatters. Detailed farming routes help you plan a lap.

Common beginner mistakes

AoE farming looks simple but sinks newcomers on three things:

1. Too big a pack at once. Twenty mobs gathered, not enough damage, dead. Grow the size gradually. 2. Forgetting mana. Drink between cycles and keep a reserve for Ice Block. Mind your mana regeneration. 3. A pack of casters. Mobs that cast spells hit through the root — farming them is dangerous. Choose melee mobs.

AoE farming on the WowX5 x5 server

On WowX5 x5 the boosted rates make AoE farming even better: mobs respawn faster and a pack yields more experience and loot. It is a great way to fund an epic mount or raid consumables.

FAQ

Which class is best for AoE farming

The mage is the gold standard thanks to Frost Nova and area damage. Warrior, druid and rogue can partly AoE farm, but only the mage can safely gather and hold large packs.

How many mobs can you gather in a pack

Start with 4-6 mobs and grow as your gear and confidence improve. Experienced mages pull 10-15 at a time, but this requires precise root timing and a mana reserve.

Why does the pack kill the mage despite the root

The pack likely contains casters or mobs immune to root that hit through Frost Nova. The root also breaks on damage, so keep Blink and Ice Block ready.
