Mage Conjured Items: Water, Food and Mana Gems Explained

Mage conjure water and food is the class's key utility: the mage feeds and waters himself and supplies the whole group as well. This guide lists every rank of Conjure Water and Conjure Food, the Classic mana gems, their cooldowns and the trading rules in patch 1.12.1 — everything a mage needs on the WoW x5 server.

Conjure Water by rank

Conjure Water is an Arcane spell with a 3-second cast. To regain mana you must sit and drink; from rank 5 onward drinking lasts 30 seconds.

The number of bottles per cast grows with level: at the level you learn a rank you get 2 bottles, then 2 more per level, up to 20. Rank 7 is the exception and gives 10 bottles right away. So during the first levels of a new rank it is sometimes better to cast the previous one — you get more bottles.

How to get Crystal Water

In 1.12.1 rank 7 is not sold by trainers. It is the reward of the class quest Arcane Refreshment from Lorekeeper Lydros in the library of the west wing of Dire Maul: you have to kill Hydrospawn in the east wing of the dungeon and bring back the Hydrospawn Essence.

Conjure Food

Conjure Food works the same way but restores health:

  • level 6 — Conjured Muffin, 61 health;
  • level 12 — Conjured Bread, 243;
  • level 22 — Conjured Rye, 552;
  • level 32 — Conjured Pumpernickel, 874;
  • level 42 — Conjured Sourdough, 1392;
  • level 52 — Conjured Sweet Roll, 2148;
  • level 60 — Conjured Cinnamon Roll, 3180.

Rank 7 is not sold by trainers either: in 1.12.1 it is learned from a tome that drops from Archivist Galford in Stratholme. Crystal Water and Cinnamon Rolls can be used from level 55.

Mana gems in Classic

A mana gem is the mage's personal potion replacement. It restores mana instantly, does not require sitting and has a 2-minute use cooldown.

Gems are unique and bind on pickup, so they cannot be traded. A mage can, however, carry one gem of each type: before a boss keep both a Ruby and a Citrine. In 1.12.1 mana gems share their cooldown with warlock Healthstones. The Mana Emerald only arrived in The Burning Crusade, so it does not exist in Classic. Handing out water to the group

Conjured water and food stack to 20 and are given via the normal trade window. A practical routine:

  1. Conjure a supply before the dungeon while the group is gathering.
  2. Open a trade with the healer and other mana users — one stack of water each.
  3. Give food to the warrior and rogue: they have no use for water.
  4. Top up the supply while you drink yourself.

All conjured items vanish if the character is logged out for more than 15 minutes, and they cannot be sold to vendors or on the auction house. Don't stockpile water — conjure it after you log in.

Also note that Ritual of Refreshment and mana biscuits do not exist in Classic — they belong to later expansions. Prepare water before AoE farming: as the mage AoE farming guide shows, mana consumption is very high.

Where does a mage get the last rank of water?

In 1.12.1 rank 7 of Conjure Water (Crystal Water) is not sold by trainers: it is the reward of a mage class quest in the Dire Maul library, where you must kill a water elemental.

How much mana does a Mana Ruby restore?

A Mana Ruby instantly restores 1000 to 1200 mana. Mages can conjure it from level 58, and it has a 2-minute use cooldown.

Can I sell conjured water?

No. Conjured items cannot be sold to vendors or listed on the auction house. Water and food can be traded to other players, while mana gems are soulbound and cannot be passed on.

Does conjured water disappear?

Yes. All conjured items vanish if the character has been logged out for more than 15 minutes. That is why mages conjure fresh water and mana gems after logging in.
