Hunter Pet Training: Points, Books and Stables
Taming a beast is only the start. A hunter pet is a second character with its own abilities, training points, loyalty and happiness. Here is how and where to develop it.
Contents
◆Step one: taming
Taming unlocks through a level 10 quest chain, walked through in the taming the beast guide. After that, pick your beast: families are compared in the hunter pets reference, and wild beast behaviour in the Azeroth fauna section.
Where abilities come from
There are two sources, and this is the part people miss:
- The beast trainer in a capital sells books for core abilities and their ranks: Growl, Bite, Claw, Dash and so on. Look near the hunter trainers; landmarks are in the Orgrimmar guide and the Ironforge guide.
- Other tamed beasts — some abilities are never sold. To give your pet a rare ability you tame a wild animal that already has it, learn the rank from that animal, then go back to your own pet. The full list is in the pet abilities reference.
◆Training points
Points accumulate as the beast levels and are spent on abilities. They are always short, so prioritise:
| Priority | What to take | Why |
|---|---|---|
| High | Growl at max rank | holding aggro, see threat mechanics |
| High | Bite or Claw at max rank | the pet's main damage |
| Medium | Dash or Charge | closing gaps, useful in PvP |
| Low | Resistances and filler | only with points to spare |
A misallocated pet can be retrained, but it is smarter to budget points for your role from the start. Builds and the pet's role are covered in the hunter talent builds and the beast mastery build guide.
◆Happiness and loyalty
- Happiness has three states. A happy beast hits roughly a quarter harder than a content one; an unhappy beast loses a big share of its damage and eventually walks away. The fix is proper food — see the cooking guide.
- Loyalty grows with time and combat, raising the training point pool and the beast's resilience.
- Diet varies by family: meat, fish or bread. Fish is easy to supply through fishing.
◆Stable masters
A stable master in major cities holds two spare beasts alongside your active one. That lets you carry, say, a tanky bear and a fast cat for different jobs; a stabled pet does not lose loyalty. Getting there quickly is covered in the flight paths guide and the travel guide.
On x5 rates a hunter outgrows a stabled pet fast. Keep your active beast in combat — an under-levelled pet misses constantly and barely holds threat.

FAQ
?Where do I train my hunter pet
Core abilities and their ranks are sold as books by the beast trainer in a capital city. Some abilities are never sold - they only come from a tamed beast that already has them.
?What are training points
A pet-side resource that accumulates with levels and is spent on abilities and their ranks. You never have enough, so Growl and your attack stay max rank while secondary picks get trimmed.
?Why does pet happiness matter
Happiness drives damage directly: a happy pet hits roughly a quarter harder than a merely content one, while an unhappy pet loses a large chunk of damage and may eventually leave. Feed it the right food.
?How many pets can I keep
In 1.12.1 the stable holds two pets plus your active one. Swapping at the stable master is free, but training a brand new beast still costs points and time.
