A DPS (damage dealer) is responsible for damage — the one who actually kills mobs and bosses. But in WoW Classic mashing buttons is not enough: rotation, ability priority, hit cap and threat control all matter. A good DPS deals maximum damage without ripping aggro off the tank or forcing the healer to save them. Below are universal principles for any class.
Step one for damage is the hit cap. Misses on a boss cost more damage than any crit: a physical DPS needs a hit buffer, a caster needs spell hit. Details are in the hit cap guide and the spell hit cap guide.
What a DPS does
A DPS's job is maximum damage without losing control:
- keep your rotation/priority running with no gaps;
- don't outpace the tank on threat — threat mechanics knows 110%/130%;
- strike from behind or the side where it gives a bonus (rogues) and avoid cleaves;
- swap to crowd control or focus targets on command.
DPS come as melee (warrior, rogue, shaman, cat druid) and ranged (mage, warlock, hunter, balance druid).
Rotation and priority
Each class has its own rotation, but the principles are shared:
- no downtime — your resource (rage, energy, mana) should be working, not idle;
- follow the button priority — key abilities first, fillers in the gaps;
- keep debuff uptime — poisons, bleeds and curses should not fall off.

Threat control
Even top damage is useless if you die by ripping aggro:
- hold burst 3–5 seconds after the pull to let the tank build threat;
- watch a threat meter and slow down near the cap;
- some classes can drop threat (hunter Feign Death, rogue Vanish, warlock Soulshatter via pet).

- then your main damage stat (spell power / attack power / crit);
