Frost Mage — build, talents and rotation

The frost mage is the king of survivability and control in WoW Classic. It is the best spec for PvP, solo leveling and the famous AoE farm: Ice Armor, Ice Block and instant freezes make the mage nearly unkillable, while Winter's Chill and Shatter turn Frostbolts into reliable burst. In raids mages usually go fire, but for everything else frost is choice number one.
A frost mage lives by range control. Keep the target away with Frostbolt and Frost Trap, and land Shatter on a frozen target — crit chance against a rooted victim skyrockets, turning Frostbolt into heavy burst.
What this build is for
Frost is the most versatile mage spec in vanilla:
- PvP — the top mage spec: roots, Ice Block, Ice Barrier and endless kiting.
- Solo and leveling — high survivability, safe grinding, few deaths.
- AoE farm — Improved Blizzard plus Cone of Cold mow down packs in Maraudon and Sentinel Hill.
- Raids — weaker damage than fire, but taken for Winter's Chill (a -10% frost resistance style debuff for the group).

For AoE farming some points go into Improved Blizzard and Permafrost, for pure PvP into Improved Ice Block and Ice Barrier.
Rotation and play
Single target: keep Ice Armor up, open with Frostbolt, and on approach Frost Nova + step back and Shatter-burst the frozen target. Against dangerous foes use Ice Block to drop damage and heal.
AoE: gather the pack, apply Frost Trap/Nova, spin Blizzard and Cone of Cold, finish with Frostbolt volleys. Cast-weaving details and macro templates are in the mage rotation guide and mage macros.
Stats and gear
Priority for frost: spell power → hit (to the cap) → intellect/crit → spirit. In PvP stamina and pushback resistance gain value.
