Mage Macros WoW Classic: Best Commands for PvE and PvP
The mage is one of the most button-heavy classes in WoW Classic. On WowX5 x5 mages often hold the key AoE role in dungeons and interrupt dangerous casts in PvP. The right macros save dozens of action bar slots.
There is no /stopcasting command in the 1.12.1 client — use /script SpellStopCasting() instead. Put it on the first line to instantly cancel your current cast and fire another spell right away (for example, Counterspell).
The 1.12.1 client has no bracket conditionals (modifier conditions like mod:shift, @focus, combat) and no focus target. Modifiers are done with /script using IsShiftKeyDown() / IsControlKeyDown() and CastSpellByName("…"). Only one spell on the global cooldown can fire per key press. A macro is limited to 255 characters.
Contents
Core Combat Macros
Fireball with Cancel Cast
Cancels the current cast and starts a new one:
/script SpellStopCasting()
/cast Fireball
Presence of Mind + Fireball (Instant Cast)
The Arcane talent Presence of Mind (3 min cooldown) does not trigger the global cooldown, so the Fireball in the same macro becomes instant:
/cast Presence of Mind
/script SpellStopCasting()
/cast Fireball
Frost Nova / Frostbolt by Modifier
A one-button "Frost Nova + Frostbolt" combo does not work — both spells are on the global cooldown. Use a toggle instead: Shift — Frost Nova, no Shift — Frostbolt.
/script if IsShiftKeyDown() then CastSpellByName("Frost Nova") else CastSpellByName("Frostbolt") end ◆Interrupt and Control
Counterspell — Instant Counter
/script SpellStopCasting()
/cast Counterspell
Polymorph on Mouseover
There is no focus target in 1.12.1. A working replacement is polymorphing the enemy under your cursor without losing your current target: the macro targets it, casts Polymorph and restores your previous target.
/script if UnitExists("mouseover") and UnitCanAttack("player","mouseover") then TargetUnit("mouseover") CastSpellByName("Polymorph") TargetLastTarget() else CastSpellByName("Polymorph") end
To quickly get back to your sheep target, use /target Name (the exact mob or player name) or mark it with a raid icon — the focus target only appeared in TBC.
◆Teleport and Portal
Teleport by Modifier
| Modifier | Destination |
|---|---|
| None | Stormwind / Orgrimmar |
| Shift | Ironforge / Undercity |
| Ctrl | Darnassus / Thunder Bluff |
Example for Alliance:
/script local c=CastSpellByName if IsShiftKeyDown() then c("Teleport: Ironforge") elseif IsControlKeyDown() then c("Teleport: Darnassus") else c("Teleport: Stormwind") end
For Horde, substitute Teleport: Orgrimmar, Teleport: Undercity and Teleport: Thunder Bluff. The quoted name must exactly match the spellbook name.
Group Portal
/script local c=CastSpellByName if IsShiftKeyDown() then c("Portal: Ironforge") elseif IsControlKeyDown() then c("Portal: Darnassus") else c("Portal: Stormwind") end
Defensive Macros
Ice Barrier
Frost talent with a 30 sec cooldown — refresh the shield before the pull and right after it breaks.
/cast Ice Barrier
Blink — Emergency Escape
/script SpellStopCasting()
/cast Blink
Ice Block — Last-Resort Save
Invisibility does not exist in 1.12.1 — it was added in TBC. The mage's emergency defensive in Classic is Ice Block (Frost talent):
/script SpellStopCasting()
/cast Ice Block
AoE Macros for Dungeons
Blizzard
After pressing, select the area with the mouse. It is an 8-second channeled spell.
/cast Blizzard
Frost Nova / Cone of Cold by Modifier
Both spells are on the global cooldown, so they will not fire back to back in one macro. Shift — Frost Nova, no Shift — Cone of Cold:
/script if IsShiftKeyDown() then CastSpellByName("Frost Nova") else CastSpellByName("Cone of Cold") end
In WowX5 dungeons, drop Blizzard on a mob pack while the tank holds them in place; if mobs break loose onto you, Frost Nova, step back and keep AoEing. Coordinate with the tank before pulling so they know where your AoE will land.
PvP Mage Macros
Polymorph with Cancel Cast
Cancels your current cast and starts Polymorph on your target right away:
/script SpellStopCasting()
/cast Polymorph
Mirror Image (Not in Vanilla — WotLK)
There is no Mirror Image in Classic 1.12.1. For survival keep Ice Barrier, Blink and Ice Block on separate buttons — two global-cooldown spells in one macro will not both fire.
Useful Mage Macros Table
| Name | Code | Purpose |
|---|---|---|
| Stop-Fire | /script SpellStopCasting() + /cast Fireball | Instant cast switch |
| Fast Counter | /script SpellStopCasting() + /cast Counterspell | Quick interrupt |
| Mouseover Poly | /script + TargetUnit("mouseover") | CC without target loss |
| Teleport Menu | /script + IsShiftKeyDown() | Several cities on one button |

FAQ
?How to make a teleport macro for a mage?
Use /cast Teleport: Stormwind (or the city you need). There are no bracket modifier conditionals in 1.12.1, so several cities on one button are done with /script checking IsShiftKeyDown() and IsControlKeyDown() and calling CastSpellByName with the teleport name. Every teleport consumes a Rune of Teleportation, every portal a Rune of Portals.
?How to make an interrupt macro for a mage?
Use /cast Counterspell — it interrupts the enemy cast and locks that school of magic for 10 sec. There is no /stopcasting command in 1.12.1; put /script SpellStopCasting() on the first line instead to cancel your own cast and Counterspell immediately.
?Is Spellsteal available in WoW Classic 1.12.1?
No — Spellsteal was added in TBC. In Classic the mage cannot steal buffs. The mage's only dispel is Remove Lesser Curse, which removes 1 curse from a friendly target.
