Hunter Shots 1.12.1: Aimed Shot, Multi-Shot, Arcane Shot and More
Hunter shots are the core of the class damage and control: from Auto Shot to the rare Tranquilizing Shot that every raid needs. In this guide for the WoW x5 server we cover every shot in Vanilla 1.12.1, their levels and cooldowns, Auto Shot clipping and the infamous dead zone.
Contents
◆Auto Shot and Range
Auto Shot is available from level 1 and fires at the target until you cancel it. It provides most of the hunter's damage, and all other shots are woven in between its shots. Auto Shot speed depends on your weapon and haste effects, and its damage on your weapon and ammunition; arrows and bullets are covered in the hunter ammo guide.
All shots work at 8 to 35 yards. Melee attacks reach up to 5 yards, so the space between 5 and 8 yards is the dead zone: there the hunter can neither shoot nor hit the enemy in melee. Only Scatter Shot, Volley and your pet work from it. Mobs with root effects are especially dangerous because they can pin the hunter in the dead zone.
◆Auto Shot Clipping
Clipping means delaying Auto Shot with badly timed shots. Aimed Shot, with its 3-second cast, interrupts the Auto Shot cycle, and pressing it mid-fight costs you shots. Instant shots should also be pressed right after an Auto Shot fires, not just before it. Ready-made cycles for different weapon speeds are in the hunter rotation, and handy buttons are in hunter macros.
◆Core Shots
Arcane Shot
Learned at level 6, with 8 ranks. An instant shot dealing Arcane damage with a 6-second cooldown. Your main instant shot for leveling and fighting on the move.
Concussive Shot
Learned at level 8. Dazes the target and slows it by 50% for 4 seconds, with a 12-second cooldown. It helps you keep range and stop the enemy from closing into the dead zone.
Multi-Shot
Learned at level 18, with 5 ranks. Hits up to three targets, with a 10-second cooldown. Rank 5 was added in patch 1.9 and is learned from a book. In dungeons do not use Multi-Shot near crowd-controlled targets.
Aimed Shot
A third-row Marksmanship talent with 6 ranks. A powerful shot with a 3-second cast and a 6-second cooldown. It works best as an opener, while the target is not yet attacking you.
Control and Raid Shots
Scatter Shot
A fifth-row Marksmanship talent. Deals 50% weapon damage and disorients the target for 4 seconds, range up to 15 yards, 30-second cooldown. Any damage breaks the effect. A PvP classic: Scatter Shot, step back and drop a Freezing Trap, see the guide to hunter traps.
Tranquilizing Shot
Removes one Frenzy effect from an enemy, 20-second cooldown, requires level 60. In 1.12.1 it cannot be bought from a trainer: it is learned from a book that drops from Lucifron in Molten Core. It is essential on Magmadar, Chromaggus and Flamegor, so raids usually set up a hunter rotation for removing Frenzy.

FAQ
?Where do I get Tranquilizing Shot in 1.12.1?
In Vanilla Tranquilizing Shot is not sold by trainers. It is learned from the Tome of Tranquilizing Shot, which drops from Lucifron, the first boss of Molten Core. The tome requires level 60 and binds on pickup.
?What is the hunter dead zone?
It is the distance of 5 to 8 yards from the target. Within 5 yards melee attacks work, beyond 8 yards shots work, and in between the hunter can do almost nothing except Scatter Shot, Volley and pet commands.
?Is Aimed Shot available to every hunter?
No. Aimed Shot is a third-row Marksmanship talent that requires 10 points in the tree. It has 6 ranks, a 3-second cast time and a 6-second cooldown.
?How many targets does Multi-Shot hit?
Multi-Shot hits up to three targets, is learned at level 18 and has a 10-second cooldown. Rank 5 was added in patch 1.9 and is learned from a book rather than a trainer. Keep in mind that Multi-Shot breaks Freezing Trap and Polymorph on nearby targets.
