Hunter Ammo Guide: Arrows, Bullets, Quivers and Pouches

Section: Classes & races 4 min read Vanilla 1.12.1 · x5 Updated 02.10.2026

Hunter arrows and bullets are the consumable that powers Auto Shot and every special shot. In Vanilla 1.12.1 ammo adds a fixed damage-per-second value to your ranged weapon, so picking the right ammo matters about as much as a new bow. Levelling is fast on WoW x5, so upgrade your ammo as soon as each new tier unlocks.

How ammo works

Bows and crossbows fire arrows, guns fire bullets. Ammo goes into the dedicated ammo slot on the character pane, and every shot consumes one round. The ammo damage-per-second bonus is added to the weapon's DPS, so slower weapons gain more damage per shot from it. Ammo stacks to 200.

Ammo by level

Vendor arrows and bullets of the same tier are equally strong; the only difference is the weapon type.

LevelArrowBulletDamage per sec
1Rough ArrowLight Shot1.5
10Sharp ArrowHeavy Shot3.5
25Razor ArrowSolid Shot7.5
40Jagged ArrowAccurate Slugs13
52Thorium Headed ArrowThorium Shells17.5

The first four tiers are sold in unlimited quantities by ammo vendors all over the world. Thorium ammo is not sold by vendors.

Engineering bullets

Engineers craft their own bullets, which are often stronger than vendor ones:

  • Crafted Light, Heavy and Solid Shot — 2, 4.5 and 8.5 damage per second from levels 5, 15 and 30.
  • Hi-Impact Mithril Slugs — 12.5 damage per second from level 37.
  • Mithril Gyro-Shot — 15 damage per second from level 44.
  • Thorium Shells — 17.5 damage per second from level 52; the recipe needs 285 skill, and each batch takes 2 Thorium Bars and 1 Dense Blasting Powder.

Engineers cannot craft arrows. However, 200 Thorium Shells can be turned in through a repeatable quest in Ironforge (Alliance) or Orgrimmar (Horde) for Thorium Headed Arrows. Learn more about the profession in our engineering guide.

Rare ammo

There are also bind-on-pickup rounds: Doomshot (20 damage per second), Miniature Cannon Balls (20.5), Rockshard Pellets (18), plus the faction Ice Threaded Arrow and Ice Threaded Bullet (16.5). These come from drops and quest rewards and cannot be mass-produced, so thorium ammo remains the backbone of a raid supply.

Quivers and ammo pouches

A quiver holds arrows only, an ammo pouch holds bullets only. Both take a bag slot and grant ranged attack speed. Only one such container counts.

Quiver of the Night Watch is the reward for «The Night Watch» quest from Althea Ebonlocke in Duskwood. Ribbly's Quiver is tied to Blackrock Depths — see the Blackrock Depths guide. Ancient Sinew Wrapped Lamina is awarded for the hunter epic bow quest.

Совет

A 16–18 slot quiver holds 3200–3600 arrows — enough for any raid with room to spare. Remember to refill it before you leave town.

Bow, crossbow or gun

Vendor ammo of the same tier is identical, so choose the weapon by its own damage and stats. Vanilla racial bonuses: dwarves get +1% crit chance with guns, trolls get +1% crit chance with bows. If you are an engineer, a gun is the better deal: you can craft strong bullets yourself and stop depending on vendors. The best raid weapons are covered in hunter pre-raid BiS.

How much to bring to a raid

A hunter with a fast weapon and a 15% quiver fires hundreds of shots in a single long fight. A practical target for a raid night is 1000–2000 rounds (5–10 stacks): a full quiver plus one or two stacks in your bags. Running out of ammo mid-fight means zero damage, so check your supply together with food and potions. The rotation that burns through that ammo is covered in the hunter rotation guide.

FAQ

What arrows and bullets are best at level 60?

Among mass-available ammo, thorium is the best: Thorium Shells for guns and Thorium Headed Arrows for bows, both 17.5 damage per second from level 52. Engineers craft the shells, and the arrows are handed out in Ironforge and Orgrimmar in exchange for 200 Thorium Shells.

How much attack speed does a quiver give?

Common quivers and ammo pouches give 10 to 13 percent ranged attack speed, rarer ones 14 and 15 percent. The best Vanilla quiver, Ancient Sinew Wrapped Lamina from the hunter epic quest, gives 15 percent and 18 slots.

Can I put bullets in a quiver?

No. A quiver only holds arrows and is for bows and crossbows, an ammo pouch only holds bullets and is for guns. The speed bonus only applies from a single equipped quiver or pouch.

How much ammo should I bring to a raid?

A practical target for a level 60 raid night is 1000 to 2000 rounds, which is 5 to 10 stacks of 200. Fill your quiver completely and keep an extra stack in your bags.
