Mage PvE Rotation: Ability Priority and Cooldowns
Vanilla WoW Classic 1.12 · x5 realm · wowx5.ru# Mage PvE Rotation: Ability Priority and Cooldowns
A correct mage rotation is not a memorized sequence but a priority system: you pick the most valuable available ability at each moment. Below is a working PvE scheme for the WoW Classic X5 server (x5 rates, patch 1.12.1).
Role and Spec
The mage is a pure ranged caster DPS. In raids usually Fire for the Improved Scorch debuff; on fire-resistant bosses go Frost. Arcane is niche.
Ability Priority
| # | Ability | When to use |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Fire — Scorch ×5 | First stack 5 Improved Scorch (Fire Vulnerability). |
| 2 | Fire — Fireball | Your main spam cast after the stacks. |
| 3 | Fire — Fire Blast | Instant, on cooldown, when you're not moving. |
| 4 | Frost — Frostbolt | Pure single-rank spam on fire-resistant bosses. |
| 5 | Any — Polymorph | Crowd control an extra target in pulls. |
Opener (Pull)
Opener (Fire): pre-pull Arcane Intellect on the raid, Mage Armor. Start: 5×Scorch (stack Fire Vulnerability) → Combustion → Fireball spam, Fire Blast on cooldown. Frost: just Frostbolt spam.
Cooldowns and Consumables
Combustion (guaranteed Fire crits), Presence of Mind + Pyroblast (instant big hit), Arcane Power, mana potions, spellpower trinkets. Evocation restores mana. Keep Fire Vulnerability on the boss for the whole raid.
Common Mistakes
Don't move needlessly — moving loses casts (use Fire Blast/Scorch on the move). Don't over-threat at pull — open after the tank. Keep 5 Scorch stacks if you are the assigned 'scorcher'.

FAQ
Fire or Frost for raids?
On most bosses, Fire for the Improved Scorch debuff (+15% raid fire damage). On fire-resistant bosses (e.g. Ragnaros) switch to Frost.
What is Improved Scorch?
A Fire Vulnerability debuff: 5 Scorch stacks give the target +15% fire damage taken. One 'scorcher' mage keeps it up for all raid fire casters.
How does a mage manage threat?
Open after the tank, use Ice Block/Invisibility on threat spikes, and don't dump burst cooldowns in the first seconds of a fight.
