A character starts with one or two weapon types even though the class usually allows far more. The rest comes from a weapon master — a dedicated capital city NPC. Here is where to find one and what they can actually give you.

Weapon master versus class trainer

Your class trainer covers spells, armour and dual wield. A weapon master covers weapon types only: swords, axes, daggers, staves, bows and so on. The fee is small — the real cost is the time spent levelling the new skill.

Which weapons each class can use

ClassAllowed weapon types
Warrioreverything but wands: swords, axes, maces, polearms, staves, daggers, fist, bows, guns, crossbows, thrown
Paladinswords, axes, maces (one and two-handed), polearms
Hunterbows, guns, crossbows, daggers, swords, axes, polearms, staves, fist
Roguedaggers, one-handed swords and maces, fist, bows, guns, crossbows, thrown
Shamanmaces and axes (one and two-handed), daggers, fist, staves, shields
Druiddaggers, maces (one and two-handed), staves, polearms, fist
Priestdaggers, one-handed maces, staves, wands
Magedaggers, one-handed swords, staves, wands
Warlockdaggers, one-handed swords, staves, wands

Paladins cannot use daggers or staves, hunters cannot use maces, rogues cannot use axes or anything two-handed, and shamans cannot use swords or polearms. These are hard class limits that no trainer can bypass.

Where to find weapon masters

Alliance:

  • Stormwind, Old Town — Woo Ping, with a wide selection. City landmarks are in the Stormwind guide.
  • Ironforge, Military Ward — Buliwyf Stonehand; thrown weapons come from Bixi Wobblebonk. See the Ironforge guide.
  • Darnassus, Craftsmen's Terrace — Ilyenia Moonfire. See the Darnassus guide.

Horde:

  • Orgrimmar, Valley of Honor — Sayoc and Hanashi split melee and ranged between them. See the Orgrimmar guide.
  • Undercity, War Quarter — Archibald. See the Undercity guide.
  • Thunder Bluff, middle rise — Ansekhwa. See the Thunder Bluff guide.

Why bother learning a new type

  • The best drop was the wrong type. This is the main reason: BiS weapons in dungeons and raids do not care which skill you happen to have.
  • Different roles. A tanking warrior wants a shield and a one-hander, fury wants two weapons — see the dual wield guide.
  • Ranged opener. A bow or gun adds free damage while mobs close the gap.
Важно

A new weapon type starts at low skill, and skill directly drives misses and glancing blows. The maths is in the weapon skill reference and the weapon skills levelling guide. Retraining right before a raid is too late — grind it on same-level mobs in advance.

FAQ

What is a weapon master

A separate capital city NPC who teaches, for a small fee, the weapon types you did not start with. Your class trainer does not cover this; they handle spells and armour only.

Can I learn any weapon I like

No. A weapon master only grants types your class is allowed to use at all. Mages, priests and warlocks can never learn axes or shields, and a rogue will never be taught a two-handed weapon.

Do I have to level a new weapon skill from scratch

Yes. A freshly learned type starts at minimum skill and has to be pushed to your level cap by hitting things. While the skill is low you will see plenty of misses and glancing blows.

Where do I find weapon masters

For the Alliance: Old Town in Stormwind, the Military Ward in Ironforge and the Craftsmen's Terrace in Darnassus. For the Horde: the Valley of Honor in Orgrimmar, the War Quarter in Undercity and the middle rise of Thunder Bluff.
