Warrior Stances: Battle, Defensive and Berserker Stance

Section: Classes & races 4 min read Vanilla 1.12.1 · x5 Updated 04.10.2026

Warrior stances are the foundation of playing a warrior in World of Warcraft Vanilla 1.12.1: your stance decides which abilities you can use, how much damage you deal and take, and how much threat you generate. On the WoW x5 server stances work exactly as in the original 1.12.1 patch, so everything below applies to our realm.

The three stances and how to get them

A 1.12.1 warrior has three stances and only one can be active at a time. Switching is instant and does not trigger the global cooldown, but the stance itself has a 1 second cooldown.

  • Battle Stance — available from level 1. A balanced stance with no passive damage or defense modifiers.
  • Defensive Stance — rewarded by a class quest at level 10. At the same level the warrior also learns Taunt.
  • Berserker Stance — rewarded by a class quest at level 30.

We cover the full quest chains for Alliance and Horde in a separate article — see warrior stance quests. This guide focuses on what stances do in combat.

Passive stance modifiers in 1.12.1

StanceDamage dealtDamage takenOther
Battleunchangedunchangedreduced threat
Defensive−10%−10%increased threat (×1.3)
Berserkerunchanged+10%+3% critical strike chance, reduced threat

Defensive Stance is the only stance with increased threat generation, which is why tanks stay in it almost all the time. The Protection talent Defiance further increases threat in this stance only. Battle and Berserker Stance use a threat multiplier below baseline, which helps melee damage dealers avoid pulling aggro off the tank. Read more about the multipliers in our article on threat mechanics.

Berserker Stance is the main damage stance: the extra 3% crit stacks with the Cruelty and Flurry talents. The price is 10% more damage taken, so standing in it while tanking is dangerous. On the other hand, more damage taken also means more rage.

Abilities by stance

StanceExclusive to this stanceShared with another stance
BattleCharge, Overpower, Thunder Clap, Mocking Blow, Retaliation, Sweeping StrikesRend and Shield Bash (with Defensive), Hamstring and Execute (with Berserker)
DefensiveTaunt, Shield Block, Shield Wall, Disarm, RevengeRend and Shield Bash (with Battle)
BerserkerIntercept, Whirlwind, Berserker Rage, Recklessness, PummelHamstring and Execute (with Battle)

Heroic Strike, Sunder Armor, Cleave, Slam, Bloodrage, all shouts and the talent strikes Mortal Strike, Bloodthirst and Shield Slam work in every stance. For the complete list with training levels, see the reference of warrior abilities. Shouts are not tied to a stance either — they have their own guide, warrior shouts.

Rage loss and Tactical Mastery

The main cost of changing stances is rage. Without talents, switching stances drains your rage to zero. The Arms talent Tactical Mastery (5 points) lets you keep up to 5 rage per point, so up to 25 rage at full investment. Anything above that cap is lost.

That is why almost every popular build — Arms, Fury and even some Protection builds — takes Tactical Mastery: 25 rage is enough for Overpower, Pummel or Disarm right after the swap. Talent options are covered in warrior talent builds.

Совет

Spend excess rage before changing stance (on Heroic Strike or Sunder Armor, for example) so it does not go to waste. Bloodrage before you engage gives rage regardless of stance.

Stance dancing in PvP and PvE

Stance dancing is rapid stance swapping to use situational abilities. It is easiest with macros: one button switches stance, another uses the ability. Ready-made examples are in warrior macros.

Typical PvP tricks:

  • Charge (Battle) → Berserker Stance → Intercept to stun twice and catch the target.
  • Enemy dodges → Battle Stance → Overpower.
  • Enemy casts → Berserker Stance → Pummel; with a shield in Battle or Defensive Stance you can use Shield Bash instead.
  • Against rogues and warriors — Defensive Stance → Disarm.
  • Fear incoming — Berserker Stance → Berserker Rage grants immunity to fear.

In PvE stance dancing is less frequent: tanks pop into Berserker Stance for Berserker Rage against fears on Onyxia or Magmadar, while damage dealers in Battle Stance use Sweeping Strikes and Overpower. More rotation patterns are in the warrior rotation guide, and arena and battleground tactics in the warrior PvP guide.

FAQ

How do I get Defensive Stance and Berserker Stance?

Defensive Stance is a reward from a level 10 warrior class quest, Berserker Stance from a level 30 class quest. Battle Stance is available from level 1. On WoW x5 the quests are the same as in original 1.12.1.

What does Berserker Stance do in 1.12.1?

Berserker Stance increases critical strike chance by 3% but increases all damage taken by 10%. It unlocks Intercept, Whirlwind, Berserker Rage, Recklessness and Pummel.

Why do I lose rage when changing stances?

Switching stances drains your accumulated rage. The Arms talent Tactical Mastery lets you keep up to 5 rage per talent point, up to 25 rage with all five points.

What is stance dancing?

Stance dancing means swapping stances quickly to use abilities that require a specific stance, such as Overpower in Battle Stance, Pummel in Berserker Stance or Disarm in Defensive Stance.
