Warrior Stances: Defensive and Berserker Stance Quests

Section: Quests 5 min read Vanilla 1.12.1 · x5 Updated 02.10.2026

Warrior stances decide which abilities your character can use in combat, so in WoW Vanilla 1.12.1 earning them is a core part of levelling. On WoW x5 Battle Stance is available from level 1, while Defensive Stance and Berserker Stance must be earned through class quests at level 10 and level 30. Below you will find where each race picks up the quests, what each stance does and how to dance between them.

The three warrior stances in Vanilla

Switching stance is instant, has a 1 second cooldown and does not trigger the global cooldown. The price of a swap is rage: everything above your talent threshold is lost. Read more in the article on combat resources and rage.

  • Battle Stance is a balanced stance with no bonuses or penalties, the default for levelling and charging into a fight.
  • Defensive Stance reduces damage taken and damage dealt by 10% and increases threat generated. It is the tanking stance; the mechanics are covered in the page on threat and aggro.
  • Berserker Stance increases critical strike chance by 3% but raises all damage taken by 10%. It is the main raid stance for Fury.

Defensive Stance quest (level 10)

From level 10 your warrior trainer sends you to a racial mentor. Every version gives the same reward: Defensive Stance, together with Sunder Armor and Taunt.

RaceQuestMentor and objective
HumanBartleby's MugHarry Burlguard in Stormwind, a fight with Bartleby the drunk
Dwarf, gnomeVejrekMuren Stormpike in Ironforge, the head of the troll Vejrek near Frostmane Hold
Night elfVorlus VilehoofElanaria in Darnassus, the horn of the satyr Vorlus at a Teldrassil moonwell
Orc, troll, taurenPath of DefenseVeteran Uzzek at Far Watch Post, 5 Singed Scales from Thunder Ridge
UndeadUlag the CleaverDeathguard Dillinger, a fight with Ulag the Cleaver at the mausoleum

For the Horde the road to Uzzek crosses the bridge from Durotar into the Barrens. The quest is simple, but the Thunder Ridge lizards hit hard, so take it at level 10 or 11.

Berserker Stance quest (level 30)

The chain is shared by both factions. A capital warrior trainer (for example Wu Shen in Stormwind, Kelv Sternhammer in Ironforge, Sorek in Orgrimmar, Torm Ragetotem in Thunder Bluff or Baltus Fowler in the Undercity) gives The Islander. Your target is Klannoc Macleod on Fray Island off the Merchant Coast of the Barrens, south of Ratchet; a sand bar leads to the island.

The second step, The Affray: step on the grate in the middle of the crowd, beat the wave of challengers, then Big Will, and return to Klannoc in time. The reward is Berserker Stance and Intercept. The chain then continues towards the famous levelling Whirlwind Axe.

Совет

Before The Affray fill your rage and keep healing potions ready: the challengers come without pause, and Big Will hits noticeably harder than the rest.

Which abilities belong to which stance

StanceExclusive or also usable here
BattleCharge, Overpower, Thunder Clap, Retaliation, Mocking Blow, Sweeping Strikes; also Execute, Hamstring, Rend, Shield Bash
DefensiveTaunt, Revenge, Shield Block, Shield Wall, Disarm; also Rend, Shield Bash
BerserkerIntercept, Whirlwind, Pummel, Berserker Rage, Recklessness; also Execute, Hamstring

Heroic Strike, Cleave, Sunder Armor, Bloodrage, shouts and talent strikes work in any stance. The full list is on the warrior abilities page.

Tactical Mastery and stance dancing

The Tactical Mastery talent sits in tier 2 of the Arms tree and at 5 ranks keeps up to 25 rage when you switch stance. Without it every dance empties your resource, which is why almost every spec picks it up; see the warrior talent builds.

  • PvP: Intercept from Berserker Stance, then Overpower in Battle Stance after the target dodges; Berserker Rage breaks fear and grants immunity to it. More tricks are in the warrior PvP guide.
  • PvE tank: hold threat in Defensive Stance, but briefly move to Berserker Stance to use Berserker Rage against fear, then come back. Details are in the protection warrior guide.
  • Fury: most of the fight is spent in Berserker Stance, leaving it only for Sweeping Strikes in Battle Stance.

Stance swap macros

Patch 1.12.1 has no stance conditionals in macros, so there are two approaches:

  • Simple: the lines «/cast Battle Stance» and «/cast Overpower» in one macro. The first press swaps stance, the second uses the ability.
  • Scripted: «/script local x,y,a=GetShapeshiftFormInfo(1) if a then CastSpellByName("Overpower") else CastShapeshiftForm(1) end». Number 1 is Battle, 2 is Defensive, 3 is Berserker.

Ready-made sets are collected in the warrior macros guide.

FAQ

At what level does a warrior get Defensive Stance in Vanilla 1.12.1?

At level 10 through a class quest. Humans do the Harry Burlguard chain with Bartleby the drunk in Stormwind, dwarves and gnomes kill the troll Vejrek in Dun Morogh for Muren Stormpike, night elves slay the satyr Vorlus Vilehoof, orcs, trolls and tauren bring lizard scales to Veteran Uzzek at Far Watch Post, and undead kill Ulag the Cleaver in Tirisfal Glades.

How do I get Berserker Stance in WoW Classic?

At level 30 a capital city warrior trainer gives The Islander. Travel to Fray Island south of Ratchet in the Barrens and speak to Klannoc Macleod. The follow-up, The Affray, has you defeat the challengers and Big Will in the island arena; the reward is Berserker Stance and Intercept. The chain is the same for Alliance and Horde.

How much rage is kept when switching stances?

Without talents all rage is lost on a stance swap. The Tactical Mastery talent in tier 2 of the Arms tree lets you keep up to 25 rage at 5 ranks.

Can one macro swap stance and use an ability?

Patch 1.12.1 has no stance macro conditionals, so players use a script: if the needed stance is active the macro casts the ability, otherwise it switches stance. You press the button twice; stance swaps do not trigger the global cooldown.
