Profession Trainers: From Apprentice to Artisan
A Vanilla profession is not learned once, it is learned in four tiers. Each has a skill cap, and until you train the next tier the bar simply stops. Here is the order and where the trainers are.
Contents
◆The four tiers
| Tier | Skill cap | Character level | Skill needed |
|---|---|---|---|
| Apprentice | 75 | 5 | — |
| Journeyman | 150 | 10 | 50 |
| Expert | 225 | 20 | 125 |
| Artisan | 300 | 35 | 200 |
The classic beginner mistake is grinding crafts at skill 74 and wondering why nothing moves. The bar hit the tier cap: you need a trainer.
Primary and secondary professions
You can hold two primary professions and all secondary ones at once:
- Primary: blacksmithing, engineering, enchanting, alchemy, tailoring, leatherworking, mining, herbalism, skinning.
- Secondary: cooking, fishing, first aid. Overview in the secondary professions reference.
◆Where the trainers are
- Apprentice, journeyman, expert — in capitals and major settlements: Stormwind, Ironforge, Darnassus, Orgrimmar, Undercity, Thunder Bluff.
- Artisan — several professions send you out of town:
| Profession | Artisan location |
|---|---|
| Enchanting | Annora in Uldaman, a neutral trainer |
| Engineering | Gadgetzan in Tanaris |
| Leatherworking | Aerie Peak in the Hinterlands, Camp Mojache in Feralas |
| Alchemy | the master alchemist in Tanaris |
| Everything else | master trainer in your faction capital |
If you cannot find a master, ask the tier-below trainer: they point you at the next one.
Specialisations
From skill 200 some professions branch: weaponsmith and armorsmith for blacksmiths, goblin and gnomish engineering, leatherworking specialisations. Covered in the profession specialisations guide, with weaponsmith and armorsmith in detail.
◆What to pick on x5
- Gather-and-craft pairs: mining with blacksmithing, herbalism with alchemy.
- If you want gold rather than gear, take two gathering professions and farm.
- Step-by-step routes live in the per-profession guides, for example blacksmithing and alchemy.
An unlearned profession loses all skill and recipes. On x5 regrinding costs less time than on classic rates, but dungeon-only rare recipes are gone for good.

FAQ
?How many professions can I have
Two primary professions plus every secondary one: cooking, fishing and first aid. Swapping a primary means unlearning the old one and losing all of its skill.
?What tiers do professions have
Four: apprentice to 75, journeyman to 150 from level 10, expert to 225 from level 20, artisan to 300 from level 35. Each tier needs both a character level and accumulated skill.
?Where do I learn artisan
Most professions go to artisan with capital city trainers. The exceptions sit outside town: enchanting in Uldaman, engineering in Gadgetzan in Tanaris, leatherworking at Aerie Peak and Camp Mojache, alchemy in Tanaris.
?Do I lose skill when switching professions
Completely. Unlearn blacksmithing at 300 and pick it back up and you start from zero, recipes included. Make the call before you sink materials into it.
